Angel – Wonderful

Forthcoming single Wonderful has won over support from none other than Ed Sheeran who has branded it as ‘an amazing record’. Wonderful is an up tempo track with heavy innovative synths; a cool slice of R&B pop with an incredibly crowd-rousing chorus ready to set the festivals alight this summer as he graces the stages of Wireless and V Festival.

Last Word: Angel

No stranger to the music industry, Angel began his career at the age of 10 when he and his siblings formed The Charles Family.

In his mid-twenties he set up production company Parallel Music with his brother, writing for Pixie Lott, Jason Derülo and No1 single ‘Green Light’ for Roll Deep. He has a massive underground following thanks to producing and mixtapes, including the recent Any Minute Now. Lately he’s been in the studio with Frank Ocean, working on his debut album. Flavour welcomes back Angel and asks the questions his fans want to know…

Where did the name Angel come from?
I’m very spiritual; I think I’ve been put here to do angelic things, like send messages and heal people with music.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced since being discovered?
Am I good or not? Am I good enough to stand up with the rest of the UK’s finest like Jessie JDappy, Tinie Tempah and Loick Essien. We’re all doing similar genres of music, and for someone coming up straight away, you think, are you as good as them?

How has your background shaped you into the artist you are today?
From the age of 10-11, I was doing two schools a day, being promised things and not getting them, being out in the cold with no windows and travelling up and down to do shows. It’s been a long grind, but though some of the times were hard, if I hadn’t done that I wouldn’t be as shaped as I am now.

Your little brother is the rapper A Star. Will you do a tune together?
Yes. I’ve been busy and we don’t see each other a lot. When that time comes we will do a tune together. We’ve got a bond. It would be like, I know what I’m doing, he knows what he’s doing, let’s do this, it will be fun.

As a singer and a producer for years. What do you love most?
I like creating and being a composer. I love to create that meditation, that beat I’m going to be performing on and delivering on. I love making melodies and delivering them. I love both the same, but in different ways.

Who is your musical inspiration and how do you aspire to inspire other acts and music listeners?
The biggest would have to be Quincy Jones. You’ve got to listen to what is happening out there, you got to work hard, deliver and put in what you want to get out. Hard work pays off.

Who is your angel in life?
The creator, the God.

To impress the girl of your dreams, what car would you ride out with?
A black Porsche 911. It’s a vintage car, it reminds me of Beverly Hills. It’s just a dream car, two-seater and me and a chick.

You may be called Angel, but what’s the most devilish thing you’ve done?
[Laughs] I put pins on someone’s chair. I was young, it was in school, the poor little girl was in tears; it wasn’t nice at all, it was devilish. I’m friends with the girl now, though.

Any collaborations this year?
‘Go In, Go Hard’ out now, it’s part of the new soundtrack for StreetDance 2 with Wretch 32 off my EP 7 Minutes Before Time. I’ve got a new mixtape, Any Minute Now out now; I’ve got a feature with Mark Asari from Encore on there. I’m finishing the album; I’ve got it, I’m just really polishing it up.

Have you ever been star-struck?
No, because I haven’t met the people yet. I would be if I met Brandy, Quincy Jones, Rodney Jerkins and Prince.

How did you meet Frank Ocean and has he been inspirational?
It was random: I was working with producers that came over from LA. On the second to last day we were chilling and Frank walked in, he had a show in XOYO. We started playing the piano and drinking wine, it was crazy. Then I recorded ‘Rocket Love’ that he’d written. It’s played a major part in the creation of my album, obviously Frank’s massive and a credible songwriter who writes a lot of hits.

Camden Crawl Saturday Review

This was the first Camden Crawl I had been to and as I headed straight to get my wristband I wondered what would be in stall. The first act on my schedule of people to see was Durrty Goodz at the Cuban. As I turned up late it was good to see the crowd was a mixtape of ages and races, mostly skanking out and enjoying the performance. Durrty Goodz interacted with the crowd well, performing his Tim Westwood freestyle along with a whole host of other songs

Next we made our way to Camden Rock to watch the UK hip hop star that is Jehst. I had known about Jehst for a few years, but not properly looked into him or his music, although I had big fans of his around me telling me how great his music was. All the acts seemed to be on late, doing their soundcheck, so we waited for about 20 mins to see Jehst. Was it worth the wait? YES! All of the people in the tiny bar, which was full, were avid fans of his who knew every line to each song. This was one of the highlights of the crawl for me, and made me appreciate and really take notice of an old school icon.
We headed back to The Cuban to watch Ghetts, but unfortunately missed three quarters of his set due to the previous set being behind schedule. This wasn’t really too much of a problem, as I had seen Ghetts before. A lot of people turned up to watch, with people standing on tables and chairs to catch a glimpse of him. We listened to Urban Nerds who hosted The Cuban stage play and danced for a while.

Next and last stop for us was the Jazz Café, where I went to see r&b singer Angel, again it was running behind time, but as we were staying there from now we didn’t care. Few drinks later and Angel appeared on stage, the mic was still a bit too low for the singer, but as only a singer like him can do, he still managed to wow and impress the crowd, with his songs like Ride Out, and also giving the audience a live session of his brand new single. If Angel before didn’t impress you before, you would be after seeing him live.

As the whole festival was running behind time, I didn’t get to see Sway, as I had to catch my last train home, and catch some sleep for Sunday’s Crawl which was disappointing. I did have a brilliant time, getting to see some amazing live acts though so I can’t complain. Sunday’s review coming soon!

MTV Brand New for 2012

Flavour’s Shireen Fenner headed to Koko last night to the MTV Brand New for 2012, which was headlined by Wretch 32, who was named on last years list. Two other acts who were shortlisted for this year who also performed were Clement Marfo + The Frontline and singer Angel.

Clement Marfo + The Frontline kicked off the show with an intro to Barrel of a Loaded Gun. They also performed their song Champion, which has been used for the Superbowl XLV Ad and the Formula 1 video game on Xbox. The most notable performance of the night was their new single Mayhem, which is produced by Ishy (Tinie Tempah, Tinchy Stryder) featuring Kano. When Kano came to join them on the stage, the energetic and lively Clement jumped onto the floor spraying the front of the audience with water. They finished their set with latest single Overtime, which features Ghetts, and a surprise performance from the man himself.

Angel performed next with single Ride Out, and singing another single Popstar, He pleased the audience with his rendition of Rhianna’s We Found Love, also giving an exclusive teaser of his next single. He told MTV how he felt about being nominated, “It’s been a long time coming and it feels like a blessing.”

Wretch 32 the headliner of the show was joined by surprise guests; Josh Kumra for Don’t Go, Etta Bond for Forgiveness, and an even more surprising guest Loick Essien. Wretch’s performance was amped up by accompanying singers, drummers and a guitarist. His performances of, Orthodox and Traktor got the crowd fired up and proved that MTV are spot on when it comes to naming ones to watch for next year.
