Pixies Tracks Of The Week @Official6ix7 @JammerBBK @Jamminmc @DDoubleE7 @Swindle @snowydanger

Swindle x D Double E – Lemon Trees

This is a fun track from Swindle and D Double E who got together in LA to make and shoot the video for this. The beat actually has a West-Coast twang to it, and the video brings out the low-riders, herb and red cups giving it an American feel but still with D Double E’s fully British bars.

Snowy Danger ft P Money, Rocket & Little Dee – The Blue

Snowy Danger has given us some black and white visuals lifted from his forthcoming EP ‘Stella Flow’. It brings together a few of the PAP members including Rocket, but also OG’z P Money and Little Dee, who individually bring their own characteristics to their fire bars.

67 – 5am Vamping

The Brixton Hill UK Drillaz are back at it again with the release of their brilliant mini movie for ‘5am Vamping’, released on the same day as their 3rd official mixtape ‘Lets Lurk’. The mixtape headed straight into No.1 on the iTunes Hip-Hop chart within hours of release. The visuals take us on a journey from their recent set at Boiler Room, down to the Tate Britain and around their hometown.

Jammer – Dagenham Dave

Respect Jammer’s lyrics first heard on Skepta’s ‘Detox’ track, “When we turn up, them man can’t turn up / Too much Henney in my cup,” which have now also become the hook on new track ‘Dagenham Dave’ along with favourites at festivals. Watch Jammer and Big Shizz turn up at the Roundhouse pub in Dagenham before heading past the chicken shop where he passes Fusion.

The Last Skeptik ft Jammin – DAMN!

Producer The Last Skeptik is joined by Grime’s Jammin for Damn! This is a track for when you are in ones of those don’t give a f**k moods. Jammin delivers some cheeky bars over a bouncy, energetic Grime beat. Check out the visuals where they take it to Soho to some sex shops for a dark feel.

Pixies Tracks Of The Week @JammerBBK @RaxOfficial @OfficialChip @Official6ix7 @OfficialGiggs @Wretch32 @officialAvelino

Jammer – Sun City

Jammer is really bringing the heat this year already with a remix of Riton’s ‘Rinse & Repeat’ and now his own track ‘Sun City’, a nod to the UKG rave of the same name. It’s definitely going to be a future classic, especially in the rave scene. With My Nu Leng & Chase & Status on the production credits, Jammer murks the beat with 140bpm mastery and laces the beat with his party vibe bars. Let the video take you back to the old skool era of raving when the dress code was Moschino.

Rax ft. Josh Osho – Four Seasons

Rax’s new EP ‘Just 4 You’ which was released for free on Friday will let you get to know the South London rapper again, slowly easing you in. After the release of ‘The Pickpocket’ in 2012 Rax took a hiatus from the scene, but is back stronger than before musically. His new visual to ‘Four Seasons’ premiered on Friday and will warm you up on these winter days and nights. It has enchanting vocals from Josh Osho and is packed with vivid emotion and expressive lyricism. It has a hip hop and jazz influences including a sunny saxophone.

Chip – ‘BlukuByeByeBye’

If you have Chip’s EP ‘Hear Dis’ you would know about this track already as it’s taken from there. It shows Chip’s non defeatist energy, as he takes a break from the musical beef with Yungen, releasing the video to ‘BlukuByeByeBye’. The video shows footage taken from a set at Radar Radio with some other very well known MC’s such as D Double E and Novelist in it, and really captures the energy and passion of Grime music.

67 ft. Giggs – Let’s Lurk

67 are a UK rap group from South London that includes members LD, Dimzy, Monkey & Asap. Their new track ‘Let’s Lurk’ is dark and threatening with a looming feel to it, whilst the video shot at night is pretty much the same with a menacing feel with some of the members cladded with masks. Giggs, the Godfather of UK rap steps up to deliver a hot verse on the track and boy is it good. The track is trappy, drawing influences from the Chicago rap scene.

Wretch 32 & Avelino – Gift To You

Wretch 32 and Avelino dropped their joint collaborative mixtape in December ‘Young Fire Old Flame’ which popped off becoming a fast favourite for last year. The journey continues though as they release the third visual from the mixtape ‘Gift To You’ ft. Moelogo. Over a laid-back beat, they both show their lyrical wordplay with the visuals showing the footage from their recent live show at Proud in Camden.

Pixies Tracks Of The Week @Heavytrackerz @LayZ_Music @Skepta @DDoubleE7 @Prez_T @JammerBBK @RaxOfficial @KingPMoney @bignarstie @Example

The Heavytrackerz ft. Lay z – Freak You

Lay Z has gone all sentimental on us for Valentines Day proiving there is a softer side to him. Teaming up with The Heavytrackerz who have laid down a smooth beat, sampling Usher’s ‘Nice and Slow’ for Lay Z to lace his soulful and gripping vocals on allowing the vibrations of the slow bass to be heard. It’s something completely different from the Boy Better Know Grime MC, but we definitely approve! This is only available via Red Bull at the moment, but will be available tomorrow to share….listen by clicking here

Skepta ft. A$AP Nast & D Double E – Ladies Hit Squad

Another one for Valentines Day, this time from the tracksuit mafia. ‘Ladies Hit Squad’ premiered on the radio on OVO Sound and then the video dropped in full effect today. The dreamy production is produced by Skepta himself, and features a verse from Grime legend D Double E and the hook is courtesy of A$AP Nast. The Grime ladies and men will definitely be banging out this tune and it’s sure to be a hit.

Rax – Money Bee ft. Zino Brown, Dee Pee & Bonkaz

South London lyricist Rax premiered his brand new track ‘Money Bee’ on Pigeons & Planes this week after taking a short hiatus from music. His new one sees a strong return from him, and is taken from his forthcoming project ‘Just For You’ that will showcase Rax’s diversity musically and his lyrical ability. ‘Money Bee’ features Zino Brown, Dee Pee from Section Boyz and Rax who are some of the best MC’s around right now. It’s full of tough bars combined with an eerie beat.

President T & Jammer – Best In Britain

Wooooaaahhhh this is hard! President T has made a HUGE comeback with latest release ‘Greatest To Ever Touch Down’ and now has announced news of his album ‘Stranger Returns’ which should be dropping this year. ‘Best In Britain’ a hype track, samples Grime classic ‘Rhythm & Gash’ and is produced by one of the best Zeph Ellis. It has braggadocio bars from President T & Jammer who can do it because they some of the best…

P Money, Big Narstie & Example ft. Takura – Access Denied

Huge riddim from P Money, Big Narsite and Example who go back to back with some heavy duty bars with all three showcasing their different flows and lyrics. With a hook from Takura and the production from Darq E Freaker this is one of the best tracks I’ve heard from this year.

Pixies Tracks Of The Week @LadyLykez @CourtneyLDN @JammerBBK @AR15UK @JusRival

Lady Lykez – Chat To Your Man

Lady Lykez the cheeky female MC drops another fun and serious track at the same time, with a lyrical onslaught but with a positive message at it’s core. The dynamic Lykez is one of the only artists who can convey a strong message and still keep it light-hearted. She tells a story of different women all involved with the same man, she tells them they shouldn’t be fighting with each other but should be joining together. Lykez will be clashing Sox on Lord Of The Mics this month at the live show, 23rd of September at 02 Islington Academy so make sure you catch her down there!

Courtney Bennett – Motives

Courtney Bennett released the audio to her debut, self-penned single ‘Motives’ off her forthcoming EP ‘HE(art) Dealer’. The singer/songwriter/rapper has built her name in music circles and has fans in artists such as Jhene Aiko, M.I.A, Big Sean, Missy Elliot, Erykah Badu and Raekwon already. She found her Youtube presence growing after covering and interpreting classic and modern hits and now has a following with over 5 million hit and 60,000 subscribers! Listen to the futuristic synths with Courtney’s elegant tone on ‘Motives’.

Jammer – Royal Rumble

Boy Better Know’s Jammer has brought the old skool Grime vibe officially back with new track ‘Royal Rumble’, which captures what Grime was about in it’s origins with some of the scene’s most legendary MC’s; Jammer, D Double E, Footsie, Lethal B, Hype, Blacks, Jendort, Shorty, Bruza, Ears, Face and Royal. Produced by Mystry the MC’s go in hard with 13 straight back to back pure, hype, unadulterated bars. The track was created in celebration of 10 years of Lord Of The Mics and has definitely done it justice to the fullest.

AR15 Presents Can’t See Me Again ft Skepta, Bashy & Kano

The biggest rap album to ever be seen or heard out of the UK dropped last Friday 28th August on iTunes. AR15 Presents ‘Concrete Jungle’ sees over 50 of the cream of the crop of UK rappers from Grime and UK rap team up for 16 exclusive tracks and unseen collabs. ‘Can’t See Me Again’ the latest track off of the mixtape sees three Grime originators come together to exchange verses about their lives, the changes, letting go of the past and moving on for the better.

Rival – Victory Interlude

East London Grime MC Rival has dropped another winning track ahead of his debut album release.  He connects well with the down tempo, CRT produced track and talks about never giving up and how he is so close to making it. This won’t be on the album, but it’s definitely warming us up for it!

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

This week is all about the Lord Of The Mics release and all last week we saw it being talked about everywhere on the social networks and blogs and sites supporting the movement started by Ratty and Jammer…

The press launch party also took place last week, which saw press being invited down to watch the clashes before the release and everyone talking about their opinions of who won. Some of the opinions were quite definite, others were hard to tell. Now its out, I’m sure a lot of you have watched it, what do you think?

The Allstars track was also unleashed on radio and on Soundcloud for us to hear and featured Jammer, Maxsta, Big Shizz, Blizzard, Lil Nasty, Realz, D2, Lil Choppa and Zeo. Check it out now!

Goldie 1’s name has been popping up this year quite a lot on the rap circuit and I definitely like his style, he’s brought something different to the table. A very trappy style which features two of my favourites who are just getting bigger and better and have had an incredible year Sho Shallow and Ard Adz and also a strong verse from Ayo Beatz.

Two South London rappers join forces for this new club banger which sees Ghost from Squeeze 4 Ps collaborate with SN1’s Giggs. The two deliver some hard bars over a dark instrumental. Look out for more to come from Ghost next year.

One of Grime’s hardest duo’s the Newham Generals last week dropped another video this one entitled ‘Passion.’ The track was premiered on Mistajam’s show on 1Xtra recently with the video being released soon after last week and shows the General’s passion for Grime still.

Alwayz Recording artist Yellows brought out his ‘Yellows Pages 2’ EP and we should be expecting more visuals from it very very soon. The mixtape sees collaborations from Sneakbo, Paigey Cakey, Fuze BW and more. Make sure you go and get that now.

WELCOME BACK: LORD OF THE MICS 4 [Feature]

Battle rapping started in the 70’s in the inner cities in America, then as grime was born in the UK, artists created their own version of battle rapping, known as clashing. This is what Lord of the Mics is all about. The Wrap Up’s Shireen Fenner recently went to east London’s Boxpark to speak with founders Jammer and Ratty as well as three of the MC’s on Lord of the Mics 4 – DiscardaJaykae and Lady Killer

With chart-topping names previously being featured on LOTM such as WileyKanoTinchy Stryder and Skepta, it shows how big of a platform it is. Jammer tells me, “It helps the artist get out to a wider audience and be accepted in a wider audience. It’s what they do after that, its bringing awareness to the artist, once that’s there they can use it.”

Discarda agrees with Jammer that it helps push MC’s into an audience where they might not have been seen before, as he explains; “There is a new fanbase now, a young fanbase that will hopefully see me. If they like me they like me… they might not like me but it still introduces me to their fans.”

Lady Killer also spoke to me, revealing what she wants to do next: “I’m not going to let this opportunity slip; I’m going to use it to its full advantage. I’m going to release a mixtape in early 2013. I’m in the studio recording tunes and making sure they are good enough for the people.”

So what does it take to make it onto the DVD? Co-founder Ratty tells me simply, “You just got to be making a buzz for yourself and have talent. If you’re being noticed then we’ll take notice.”

Jammer says if you are working hard, then you “deserve the chance to be on there and get the promotion to the wider audience.” Other factors for him that come into it are ‘work ethic, talent, flow, and quirkiness.”

With clashing, it’s also about entertainment and how MC’s can use their lyrics to get to their opponent – usually giving the audience some laughs along the way. Last year’s edition saw a few of those ‘incidents’ and Ratty reveals, “There are loads of funny moments.”

Jaykae, who clashes Discarda, says he doesn’t take the disses personally: “I know it’s not true. Obviously he’s going to have to say a few things he don’t mean and I’m going to say a few things I don’t mean. Invasion are the best in Brum.”

In terms of preparation and content, some of the MC’s I spoke to had been clashing for a long time and weren’t nervous at all. Jaykae said, “A lot of people say that’s what I’m built for and that’s where I shine the best, I’m real good at clashing. I made loads of food in my house and smoked weed, chilled out and wrote loads of bars.”

Lady Killer gave an insight into the content she focused on for clashing Shocker, saying: “I wanted to focus on the fact that I wasn’t going to call her a tomboy and what people expected; I was going to say that ‘you’re not really that, you’re a girly girl and you wear skirts and nail varnish so don’t pretend.’”

Discarda went for a different approach and used his humour: “I’m a bit of a comedian, I just think of funny things. He’s got Sox in his crew, who’s well known established MC; I brought him into a couple of bars to hype it up a bit.”

This year will be the first time that LOTM feature females, namely Lady Killer and Lady Shocker. I ask Lady Killer why she thinks she was picked as one of the first: “I think I’m versatile; I’m different to a lot of female MC’s. I’m a unique MC. I’ve got a totally different flow; I change my flow every two minutes.”

However, she admits: “It’s a male dominated game really. I do think males don’t take females as seriously as they do other males MC’s.”

One of the most talked about clashes this year is between Jaykae and Discarda; Jay explained why the pair were put against each other: “I understand why they put us together because in London he is the person who will shut down the raves and in Birmingham I’m the person who shuts down the raves. Us two banging heads automatically – that’s going to go off.”

Whilst many participants on Lord of the Mics went on to release commercial hits, such as Wiley, Jammer says he is not interested in diluting their music: “It is bringing back the element of the big underground smashes, unmixed, edgy bass music. It just brought back that element, it’s the raw talent in its raw form and it’s exciting again.

“People are into it because it’s natural, it’s not manufactured. That’s how it was back in the day… someone would make a track then it would go through to the clubs, blast there and a major would take it on. Then it would come out in the mainstream and cross over.”

Ratty concludes: “It keeps the real essence of grime; we don’t try and make it into the mainstream. Hopefully the fans will buy it and it will get into the charts.”
