MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

This week I’m going to start off with two very special Fire In The Booth sessions. If you don’t know what it is, it was started by Charlie Sloth on BBC Radio 1Xtra and showcases the cream of UK MCs where they get to display their best lyrics. SN1’s Gunna Dee who recently released a mixtape ‘Hustler By Nature 2’ was up first. Keeping up the heat surrounding the tape, it was only right he went on the show…

North London rapper Squeeks dropped his first Fire In The Booth in 2011; two years on he returned for the second installment, really showcasing his progression since the first one. He makes this epic freestyle look effortless.

i Records are keeping it busy with two releases from the label this week.

Dru Blu keeps up the work level staying consistent by releasing another net video courtesy of Rap City TV. Keeping it real as always with this street banger, he tells us his reasons for working hard; ‘Rude boy I ain’t rich yet so what the f**k should I rest for.”

Snap Capone’s mixtape ‘Return Of The Shooter’ is the second release from i Records family. You might have seen some videos and freestyles of his recently leading up to this 25-track tape which sees him discussing life on the streets and in particular his own life. This is a hard road rap release and isn’t for the light hearted.

Producer Bayoz Muzik dropped the fourth video off his ‘Death Of A Beatmaker’ EP. ‘F U Pay Me Now’ features Tigger Da Author, Paigey Cakey and Tzy. Bayoz is known for producing beats for UK rapper Giggs as well as many others and his EP features J Spades, Blade Brown and more.

Wretch 32 caused a stir last week as he released the audio to his second single ‘Doing OK’ which comes after ‘Blackout’ featuring Shakka from his forthcoming third album. This time it features Jacob Banks, who is also part of the Renowned group. The album has no release date yet but is set to be released this year via Ministry Of Sound.

Until next time…

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

I’m going to start off with mixtapes this week; firstly because I’ve been away for a few weeks I’m still going to talk about Gunna Dee’s ‘Hustler By Nature 2’, which was released at the end of May. The mixtape was well worth the wait and sees 11 strong tracks from the SN1 representative and features from Giggs, Blade Brown and Angel. The mixtape shows Gunna’s development as an artist and a mature perspective on life…

Last week he also dropped the video to a track off the tape ‘Music Therapy’ which features BBK’s Skepta. Make sure you check out both.

This is one a lot of UK rap heads have been waiting for and it’s from Mashtown’s J Spades. ‘More Money More Pagans II’ is the second installment and follows on from the success of the first ‘MMMP,’ which threw the UK rap scene into a frenzy in 2012. The 19 track tape features some of the cream of the scene including Joe Black, Cashtastic, Chip, Blade Brown, DVS, Margs and more.

Now it’s time to look at new tracks/videos. South London’s Colours brought out a new one called ‘Lil Skeeza’ over an up tempo hip-hop instrumental with hard street lyrics. He is due to be releasing a mixtape soon, so look out for that.

We’ve had a few covers this week, the first notable one is from brother’s Mega and Mayhem who make up rap duo S.A.S. releasing their take on the classic Camp Lo record ‘Coolie High’. The track has a nice relaxed, summer vibe to it and the guy’s own insightful lyrics.

We had the lyric video first, then Sho Shallow decided to put a video together of his cover of Wale’s ‘Bad’. The track really shows the Brixton rappers talent as he puts his own spin lyrically on it.

There’s been a few live acoustic versions of this doing the rounds, but for this one Akala and Josh Osho took to Virgin Red Room for a live sessions with a full band for ‘Lose Myself’ off his newly released album ‘The Thieves Banquet’. The track is one of my favourites and has a massive rock and rap influence.

Giggs put out a short advert titled ‘Warning’ for his forthcoming ‘When Will It Stop’ album which is causing quite a buzz in the lead up to the release. The advert shows Giggs ironing to one of his tracks saying into the camera ‘When Will It Stop is round the corner lads’. There are many including me that can’t wait for the album.

After the horrific news a few weeks ago of the killing of solider Lee Rigby, emcee Boya Dee witnessed the account first hand in Woolwich tweeting it as it was happening which led to him being hounded by news teams. Last week he took to Channel 4 News, releasing a ten minute video taking camera crew on a tour of the area speaking to local people. The footage included rappers Mynature and Saskilla. You can check it out online.

MTV The Rap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

I hope everyone has been enjoying the snow over the past few days; last week was pretty jam packed and we have a few good events this week to look forward to! It looks like Chip has been having a hard time with singers recently, as he tweeted last week: “Hollering at singers for hooks does get long after a while. Time to start singing them myself here and there. #onthescene #actionman #GDS”

The Grand Hustle signee also headed down to Madame Tussauds last week, releasing a video unveiling East Coast and West Coast rap greats, Tupac, BiggieP. Diddy and Snoop Dogg. Alongside it he wrote, “I wasn’t really allowed Biggie or Tupac’s music as a kid. The first I think I bought Biggie Smalls ‘Ready to Die’ and ‘Life After Death’ at the same time, I bought both at an age when I was actually allowed to have them as music on my own.”

Last week saw more videos from the USG collective. One from the youngest member Geko, who dropped ‘Night n Day’ off his recently released ‘Voice Of The Future’ mixtape. K Koke’s visuals to ‘Real Right Now’ from the ‘Pure Koke Vol 3’ mixtape was also released, as well as the behind-the-scenes to his latest single ‘Lay Down Your Weapons’ with Rita Ora – the video for that is out now.

A track for the streets and a big collaboration is also here as Pound Sterling joined Jaja Soze to talk about being ‘Real OGs’. Sneakbo has definitely been putting in the work this year, as we saw him drop the third video from his forthcoming EP ‘Certified’ recently.

SN1 representative Gunna Dee also has a mixtape coming out on January 31 and gave us a video from it – ‘4 My Town’ features singer Loick Essien and is produced by Wizzy Wow. This is a banger and I look forward to listening to ‘Hustler By Nature 2’ when it drops.

Cashtastic is back with Steel Banglez, who produced most of his tracks for their first one of the year, entitled ‘One Day’ which features three great vocalists – Abel MillerA.R.I and Akua.

Black The Ripper headed to Amsterdam to shoot the video for ‘You Will Never Know’ which is one for the smokers and the first track to be heard from his forthcoming EP called ‘Married To Marijuana’ – the EP will drop on January 31.

There are a few good events happening this week – weather permitting I will be down at I Luv Live tonight to catch Ard Adz and Sho Shallow, alongside singers Tom Prior and Bobbi Lewis.

Saturday will see Musicalize go down at the o2 where you can see Chip, Krept & Konan and Professor Green take to the stage. See you there!

MTV Wrap Up: The UK Rap Rundown [News]

In last week’s column I gave you some info on Professor Green’s Twitter rants. This week, he and Akala went head-to-head with one another on the social networking site. Pro Green hit out at Akala after he used him as an example of white rappers depicting black culture in music, referencing Pro Green’s ‘Jungle’ negatively. Akala threw Maverick Sabre’s name in, who featured on the track, during the heated twitter discussion which led him to release a statement – read more here

Clement Marfo also went on Twitter to show his frustration at his record label recently, explaining that him and his band The Frontline’s album should have been released last autumn; yet there is still no release date. He then leaked five of his album tracks for free to his fans.

Last Monday I headed down to the Jump Off Finals at Scala, London. The MC battle was a very close one, but in the end Tenchoo was the winner of the 5K prize. The producer battle wasn’t quite as close and most people had decided on the winner Loko (Black Ice) from the first round. Dance crew Prototype won the 10K prize, the biggest of the night. Congratulations to all of the contestants for getting so far.

Squeeks has been releasing a lot of visuals this month; this week alone he has put out two. The first one is ‘Meet K’ where he talks us through a story of a female. The second one ‘I Got You’ was released yesterday and is a refix of The Weeknd’s ‘Rolling Stone’ – it’s definitely one for the ladies!

Wretch 32 released his freestyle ‘Drinking In The Sky’ featuring Chip, giving us a teaser of what to expect from his mixtape ‘Wretchercise’ the next day. This was his first full-length project in a year since his album ‘Black & White’. I have to say every one of the 17 tracks on it is strong and makes me excited for his next album.

SN1’s Gunna Dee also tells us why he likes ‘Bad Girls’ on the first video from his ‘Happy Hustler’s Day’ mixtape. The track features Angel who gives us a catchy hook.

There was said to be an interesting mixture of people in the studio last week as ShystieScorcherExo and Red Skull Beats joined Vince Kidd for what I believe will be a remix of one of his tracks – as usual, keep your ears and eyes peeled ‘til next time!
