Capital FM Summertime Ball Review

Capital FM the first national hit music radio station announced their 2012 Capital FM Summertime Ball with some of the biggest artists from the UK and US. Shireen from Flavour was in attendance backstage to catch up with the likes of Usher, Conor Maynard, Cover Drive and Dizzee Rascal and to watch performances from Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber and many more. The shows opening act was the magnificent Coldplay.

I went outside to catch one of my favourite r&b singers Usher. The last time I saw him in concert was when I was about 12 years old. He hasn’t lost his touch, his dance moves were on point, and he hit the high notes when singing ‘Climax’ and ‘Scream’.  My favourite moment was when he performed ‘Let It Burn’, with two big flames behind him, and strangely enough they did burn with one of the flames setting the stage on fire, causing someone to rush out with a fire extinguisher.

The two summer sizzler’s really were sizzling. The first surprise was Dizzee Rascal who performed his latest track ‘Power’, and we were glad to see a grime legend amongst the pop acts. Cheryl Cole was the other surprise guest after Dizzee dressed in a skintight lycra playsuit, she looked pretty amazing. It must be hard work getting into one of those, but later she told us that she goes to the gym saying her favourite workout song was, “Katy Perry, ‘Wide Awake’”.

Ed Sheeran was another highlight of the night; he was overwhelmed as he announced it was the biggest crowd he had performed too. Unlike everyone else, he walked out just him and his guitar. Singing ‘A Team’, ‘Small Bump’, and more everyone was singing along to this incredible talent.

When Justin Bieber came on I had to hold my hands over my ears as the 80,000 strong crowd started to scream all at once. He came out looking very patriotic dressed in a union jack t-shirt and doing some pretty good dance moves.  Serenading a girl for a rendition of ‘One Less Lonely Girl’ he had her in fits of tears. His songs ‘Baby’ and ‘Boyfriend’, sent the crowd insane, with girls holding up signs dotted all over the arena, it was clear to see who a lot of the people were there for.

Katie Perry closed the show dressed in 50’s style polka dots singing ‘Part Of Me’, ‘The One That Got Away’.  It was a good night for pop music, and the atmosphere in Wembley Arena was one of the best I’ve witnessed.

Marley (Film Review)

The Bob Marley and The Wailers took place at the W Hotel in London’s West End. Island Records, who Bob Marley was signed to, hosted the screening. As a music lover I was intrigued to find out the facts from the people Bob Marley was the closest to, and about the life of the man who brought reggae music to the worlds attention.

The film directed by Kevin Macdonald and produced by Steve Bing and Charles Steel is the first authorised documentary from the Marley family on the life, and universal power of one of the world’s most influential singers. This is the first time his family have let anyone use their own private archives, allowing a unique window into the heart, mind and soul of the singer, songwriter, musician and activist.

The basis of the film was to look into how Bob Marley still speaks to the world even after his death in 1981, and how he does this more intensely than any other music artist in the world. Macdonald talks about the questions he asked himself before directing the film, “Who is this man? Why did he become so successful? What was the message that he had to give out to people?” With the help of the Marley family which included Rita (his wife), his children (Ziggy and Cedella), other family members, friends and musical colleagues the film was able to go into depth and give us a full insight into the life and character of this legend, making me laugh, smile, and feel sad at different moments of the film.

Interviewing people so close to Bob Marley some who had never been interviewed before really gave a true insight into his earlier years, which have never been documented before. There was no footage of the first 11 years of his career, only a handful of photographs. Neville “Bunny” Livingston who along with Bob Marley and Peter Tosh formed the Wailers, and Neville Garrick the Wailers artistic director were the two key interview subjects in the film. The people who had never been spoken to before came in the form of one of his closest white cousins Peter, and Dudley Sibley who was the recording artist and studio janitor of Studio One and Chris Blackwell the founder of Island Records.

The film touched on Bob being mixed race, and the stigma of growing up in Jamaica attached to that. Rita was also questioned about the fact he had other girlfriends, and showed her gracefulness, even though you could see she dealt with a lot of pain, but she never stopped loving him. Cedella’s interviews were moving, where you could see this also caused her pain seeing her father hurting her mother like this, and the fact she couldn’t remember a time where she was alone with him. Both of these family members forgave him, knowing that his message and what he was doing was important.

Another unique insight was provided in the documentary when it showed the connection between Bob’s rejection by his white uncle, and the song ‘Cornerstone’, with the lyrics ‘the stone that the builders rejected, is the cornerstone’ taking on a deeper meaning and significance. Crucially, the documentary also interviewed his white first cousin Peter, and explained this connection between his father’s rejection of Bob, and one of his greatest hits.

The film was a great insight into not just Bob Marley the musician and superstar, but him as a man, getting up close and personal. I walked out of it feeling satisfied and grateful that I now knew so much about him. I feel ashamed to admit before I went in; I barely knew anything about his background like many. He was such an inspiring and mysterious character, but now with the help of this film, we can truly understand why he did what he did and what motivated him and made him one of the biggest artists of all time.

Review: Talib Kweli at HMV Forum

Talib Kweli came to London on Tuesday 20th March 2012 to HMV Forum for his first gig of his UK tour. With some new songs out from the legend, and the album ‘Prisoner of Conscious,’ on the way, anticipation was high as Flavour’s Shireen Fenner headed down there.

Mic Righteous the young UK rapper opened for Talib, performing tracks off his new mixtape Kampain, with his friend/producer/DJ on the decks Preston Play, providing Mic with the soundtrack to his performance. Opening with the track Kampain was perfectly suited, as the track gives a solid introduction and background knowledge about Mic, with him telling the audience, “that tune gets me gassed.” Next up was ‘On Your Ones,’ where he interacted with the crowd saying, “Let me see hands in the air,” and pretty much all the crowd were taking part, warming them up. My personal favourite track off the mixtape ‘I’ll Try My Best,’ where he raps from a fans perspective, was performed to the crowd, who were really starting to enjoy themselves now, with Mic dropping the microphone and leaving the stage, leaving the audience wondering what had happened. Of course after 30 seconds he is back on to perform the rest of the song with more passion and delivery. Talking to the audience again to explain his next track, ‘Look At My Balls,’ he said, “This is for the fake, the part time rappers. Make some noise for the real hip hop fans.” This track was delivered with such intensity; you could tell he was consumed by the passion of his lyrics. A freestyle was followed by the closing track ‘Winding Road,’ where the stage lights were turned off and everyone in the audience turned their phone lights on.

Lowkey the second opener for Talib Kweli was on next. There were plenty of Lowkey fans in the audience and when his second track ‘They Call Me A Terrorist,’ came on, hands were in the air waving side to side. ‘My Soul’ was also a winner, with Lowkey asking the crowd to sing ‘You can’t take my soul,’ and everyone singing along. Up next was his Fire In The Booth, with so many people knowing the words and the crowd starting to have fun and dance, accompanied by a freestyle at the end. ‘Hand On Your Gun,’ was next with everyone in the audience putting their hands up. Lowkey then talked to the audience asking them to say, “Hip hop ain’t dead, it’s in London,” and the gig turned into a chant. ‘Obama Nation,’ was next on the schedule for Lowkey. Singer Mai Khalil was brought out to perform, ‘Million Man March,’ showcasing her amazing vocal talent. The closing track, and in true Lowkey style, was ‘Long Live Palestine,’ with people in the crowd jumping up and down and pumping their fists in the air to these lyrics.

Talib Kweli’s DJ was up next to warm the crowd up for what everyone had been waiting for, asking ‘Y’all ready for Talib Kweli?’ He bursts onto the stage full of energy getting onto the first track of the night, ‘Say Something.’ “London how are you feeling?” he asks the audience, who replies with shouting, ready to hear more from the hip hop legend. He gets into track, ‘Listen,’ one of his most popular tracks. A few tracks in and he then asks ‘How many Beastie Boy fans we got in London?’ before rapping over one of their tracks, then mixing it into Drake’s ‘I’m On One,’ this bit got the crowd buzzing with the audience raving. One of the highlights of the night was Talib sampling “All The Lonely People,’ by Paul McCartney stating, “Paul McCartney denied the sample, but my s**t is doper than all the other s**t,” and when the beat dropped on the track the crowd again went crazy, enjoying the moment. The next track up was off his next album ‘Prisoner of Conscious,’ and his latest release, ‘Distractions,’ with him stating, “The first time I performed this track was at Occupy Wall St.” At the end of the track Talib gives us a freestyle highlighting why he is one of the best in the game, with the crowd clapping and cheering at the end. The DJ and Talib Kweli swap positions with him behind the booth rapping and saying, “hand in the air, say turn it up,” and the DJ at the front of the stage dancing, and then Kweli putting on Jay Z and Kanye’s track N***s In Paris. He then raps over Tyga’s ‘Rack City,’ showing us his versatility as an artist too. ‘Definition’ sent the crowd absolutely berserk from his Blacksmith days with Mos Def. The next section of the show was dedicated to his work with J Dilla, with the crowd moshing. It was getting towards the end of the night and Talib wanted everyone to remember the show as one of the best saying, “We gonna have a good old fashioned sing a long right now, clap your hands to the beat,” perfoming the track with him and Hi Tek, ‘The Blast,’ in between telling everyone to keep dancing. He leaves the stage and we think it’s all over, but the crowd want him back and are chanting, “Kweli, Kweli,” and stomping their feet. He bursts back onto the stage with as much energy as before, giving us some more classic tracks including ‘I Try,’ with Mary J Blige and the Just Blaze produced track ‘Never Been In Love.’

All in all, the show was definitely one for the hip hop lovers, full of intensity, passion and love for the music. The delivery and crowd interactions from all the performers were on point, showing that all of them had thought about their fans. I couldn’t have asked for better from the legend that is Talib Kweli, even after years in the game and being one of the most respected hip hop artists, he still performed throughout the show with as much energy, vibrancy and passion as ever.

HMV Next Big Thing Review – Cleo Sol, Starboy Nathan, Cover Drive & Clement Marfo + The Frontline

Cleo Sol led the way for the gig last Saturday night with her songs ‘High,’ ‘Loverboy’ and the Lily Allen and T Pain cover of ‘5 O’clock.’ This singer who was recently signed to Island Records stunned the crowd with her magical voice, and is tipped for big things this year.

Starboy Nathan was next on leading his set performance with ‘Diamonds,’ gaining massive applause from the audience. He then asked the crowd, “Anyone know about my first album ‘Masterpiece?’” This created a stir cuing one of his old but great tracks, ‘Do Without My Love.’ Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get It On,’ started to play and Nathan performed a cover to the song, seeing as it was the weekend before Valentines Day, the song choice was relevant. The band had left and Nathan announced, “I’m just cuing myself, it’s just me doing my thing,” with him starting and stopping the tracks himself. Then he performed a mish max remix of songs starting with Major Lazer’s ‘Pon de Floor’ as a backing track and singing over it the old school garage classic ‘I’m Sorry,’ by Monsta Boy. The last song was the most recent ‘Hangover’ saying, “My new album comes out its called 3D, which stands for determination, dedication, desire.” In the middle of ‘Hangover,’ he wows us with the ‘Teach me How To Dougie,’ dance then goes back to singing the rest of the song, also doing a dance, grinding his hips at the end for the females in the crowd.

Next up was the Barbadian group Cover Drive. Lead singer Amanda Reifer told the crowd, “When you move to the music, make sure you move those hips,” with her showing everyone how it was done. They performed the song, ‘Hurricane,’ from their forthcoming debut album. Amanda grabbed a Barbadian flag from a member of the audience and started waving it, as the drummer T-Ray Armstrong starts emceeing. As Cover Drive gained a lot of fans and followers from their YouTube covers, it was only right for them to do a cover which came in the form of Jennifer Lopez’s ‘I’m Into You,’ with T-Ray emceeing again. Amanda announced to the crowd, “This song I’m going to play for you is special, it’s our debut single.” ‘Lick Ya Down’ starts to play with Amanda asking the crowd, “London I want you to sing this for me.” Their newest single and last song of the night was up next, ‘Twilight,’ which really made the crowd go wild, with their fans dancing and singing along.

Time for a break and the headline act to set up, Clement Marfo + The Frontline. The intro begins ‘Barrel Of A Loaded Gun,’ which has one chorus. The crowd is already hyped after the intro and they launch straight into their less well-known songs, ‘Nothing To Lose,’ then, ‘Us Against The World.’ Clement Marfo talks to the crowd saying, “It’s been a big year, being tipped for MTV Brand New and HMV’s Next Big Thing,” thanking the fans for the support. Next up was ‘Survivor’s,’ which Clement dedicated to a friend that died from a gunshot wound. He really gets into the song, which means a lot to him, and the crowd starts waving their hands feeling the emotion filtering off him. It was now time to really hype themselves and the crowd up. It was time for ‘Champion,’ with Clement asking, “Whose feeling 10 feet tall?” The stage presence and energy of Clement Marfo + The Frontline on this track was amazing with the two front men Clement and Kojo jumping around the stage and dancing. ‘Overtime,’ played and the crowd was just getting more into it, with Ghetts joining them on stage for his verse and the crowd going ballistic. ‘Mayhem,’ was the last song of the night and Clement just topped off the amazing performance with a stage dive, with a bouncer pulling him back onto the stage to finish the performance.
