MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

This week is all about the Lord Of The Mics release and all last week we saw it being talked about everywhere on the social networks and blogs and sites supporting the movement started by Ratty and Jammer…

The press launch party also took place last week, which saw press being invited down to watch the clashes before the release and everyone talking about their opinions of who won. Some of the opinions were quite definite, others were hard to tell. Now its out, I’m sure a lot of you have watched it, what do you think?

The Allstars track was also unleashed on radio and on Soundcloud for us to hear and featured Jammer, Maxsta, Big Shizz, Blizzard, Lil Nasty, Realz, D2, Lil Choppa and Zeo. Check it out now!

Goldie 1’s name has been popping up this year quite a lot on the rap circuit and I definitely like his style, he’s brought something different to the table. A very trappy style which features two of my favourites who are just getting bigger and better and have had an incredible year Sho Shallow and Ard Adz and also a strong verse from Ayo Beatz.

Two South London rappers join forces for this new club banger which sees Ghost from Squeeze 4 Ps collaborate with SN1’s Giggs. The two deliver some hard bars over a dark instrumental. Look out for more to come from Ghost next year.

One of Grime’s hardest duo’s the Newham Generals last week dropped another video this one entitled ‘Passion.’ The track was premiered on Mistajam’s show on 1Xtra recently with the video being released soon after last week and shows the General’s passion for Grime still.

Alwayz Recording artist Yellows brought out his ‘Yellows Pages 2’ EP and we should be expecting more visuals from it very very soon. The mixtape sees collaborations from Sneakbo, Paigey Cakey, Fuze BW and more. Make sure you go and get that now.

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

Last week The Wrap Up headed down to the Fedz movie premiere at the Genesis Cinema in East London. The independent British film based on a policeman who resigns from the force after suspicions of corruption, instead investigates a terrorist group who have released a virus. The film has recognizable faces including Dexter Fletcher and Ashley Walters and the soundtrack is pure UK hip hop featuring music from Squingy, K Koke, DVS, J Spades, Ex, Joe Black, Logic and many more. The afterparty saw live performances from the USG team also joining them were South London’s Sho Shallow and Ard Adz.

Speaking of USG, they were in the studio last night with StayFresh. This joining of the West Midlands grime collective with the North West London rap collective means we will be hearing something epic very soon. Despa from the Stayfresh crew last night tweeted “That studio session was h’immense big up @kkokeusg @SquingyUSG the rest of USG & all my @stayfreshtweets homies.”

Peak has been a bit quiet recently, I hope this is because he’s been hard at work in the studio creating something good for us. Last week he dropped a ‘Penthouse’ freestyle video showing why he has a lot of potential to go far. Make sure you check that out.

Peak also dropped a ‘Pound Cake’ freestyle for the Rap City Back2Rap freestyle series. They talk about everything from the music scene to women telling truths in their bars.

Another South London collective STP released the video ‘Bout To Blow’. This one comes from Mitch featuring Leaanneah Lauren and Windy Music’s Sho Shallow as they spit some inspirational bars and how they’ll keep going to reach their dreams. This track can be found on The STP 2 mixtape available for free download.

Moving over to North London, Islington we saw three artists from there drop a track a together.Face and Squeeks provided the bars for ‘They Think We Made It’ joined by Frostie who delivered the hook. The track is produced by Westy and Weezy Brown.

If you haven’t already make sure you go and buy Dru Blu’s street album ‘Double Or Nothing’. On a recent interview he explained the name behind it.

“Everyone knows me as Don Strapzy Don Dru Blu everyone calls me Donny anyway so D.O.N just gave it an acronym.. ‘Double Or Nothing’ that’s how we live anyway. We put everything into this so it’s either doubling it or man’s lost everything.”

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

Colours is one of the most respected and best road rapper to come out of London, so when he dropped his mixtape ‘Where’s My Money Reloaded’ he sent the internet ablaze. Respected UK DJ’s Charlie Sloth and Ras Kwame have backed the 22 free downloadable tape which has features from K Koke, Stylo G and Gyptian. He also released the video to ‘Everything’ sampling Mariahs ‘I Give My All’ and like the mixtape sees him spitting nothing but real, life-riddled bars.

Young Don is gearing up for the release of a new mixtape the follow on from his last one The Weatherman, coming back for Part II this time with DJ Khaled hosting. He gives us a teaser of what to expect by dropping the video to ‘Harder Than Them’ a street track which we can assume to be on the tape.

At only 21, Lady Lykez is one of the best the UK has to offer in terms of her witty lyricism, her new track ‘I Love My Butt’ is no different. Topman described it as ‘a hip-hop party cut of the summer’ and she has had artists Lady Leshurr and Blizzard tweeting about it. Make sure you check it out.

Brixton rapper Sho Shallow along with partner Ard Adz puts out video and track after track, constantly impressing with not only the quantity but quality of their work too. This time Sho Shallow goes solo for new track ‘Intro’ which is the first track off his forthcoming mixtape ‘Girls In The Middle’.

Cashtastic released the visuals to ‘London Summer Day’ giving his fans something to enjoy now the sun has finally graced us for the summer. We heard the track last summer, but it doesn’t feel old with Cash tweeting, “Big up ‪@RAPCITYTV we shot this ‪#LondonSummerDay video last year, put it out a year later and it’s still fresh!”

Rap Up UK discussed the subject of haters in their recent mini documentary. They talked to artists such as Dru Blu, Margs, Political Peak, Pak Man, Fem Fel, Pound Sterling and more talking about the reason for haters such as people not wanting you to do better than them and how with success comes jealousy which breeds hate. What’s your thoughts on haters?

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

Myself and The Wrap Up’s editor went to Funny Tummy’s art exhibition on Sunday (16), which was held in the Royal Albert Hall. The artist rose to fame after creating an illustration of Rihanna which led to her wanting to find out more about him. He has since worked on art for Adidas and Universal and has done covers for music artists such as Tinie Tempah and Wretch 32. Artists present at the private launch were Wretch 32, Chip, G FrSH, Fuze BW, Mayhem and more…

I spoke to G FrSH and he said: “I think there is a big market for ‘urban artists’ art; it’s objective, it’s in the eyes of the beholder, so it doesn’t matter where it originates from… as long as it gives you a feeling you like or enjoyment.”

Look out for the review coming soon…

G FrSH is a name who has been on everyone’s lips recently. The rapper, who is part of the Disturbing London family, recently released his ‘Legoman II’ mixtape and last week took to Noisey to give them the exclusive of a slick visual off the tape for ‘Never Can I’.

In an exclusive freestyle for Virgin Red Rooms, lyricist Akala was given certain words he had to include in his bars; oblong, symbiotic, condominium, poached eggs, phoenix and disruptor. They weren’t easy words, but of course Akala made it look like light work.

South London’s Marshall McFly gets his iRecords label mate Dru Blu to feature on latest track ‘Cops and Robbers’ along with Youngs Teflon. This is a big street track and all three spit hard and fiery verses with strong deliveries.

From Geko’s debut mixtape ‘Voice Of The Future’ which was released in December comes the video to ‘The Note’, a mature and well-developed track from someone so young. Happy sweet 16th to the rapper, whose birthday it was last week.

I heard rumours last week of a few covers of Naughty Boy’s hit record ‘La La La’ which are going to be released; but not by singers. Chip then released his version, tweeting: “Congrats to @NaughtyBoyMusic on a #1 BANGER. #TeamChip here it is #ChipLaLaLa Remixhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=oxBMor8RJ5Q … RT”

Sho Shallow tweeted: “Shouts ‪@NaughtyBoyMusic n he’s song La la la! Me & ‪@ArdAdz Gotta Spesh Cover Soon Out”

Naughty Boy responded via Twitter, saying Chip’s version is ‘very sick’. Expect to see more covers of the no.1 hit to follow.

Until next time…

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

I’m going to start off with mixtapes this week; firstly because I’ve been away for a few weeks I’m still going to talk about Gunna Dee’s ‘Hustler By Nature 2’, which was released at the end of May. The mixtape was well worth the wait and sees 11 strong tracks from the SN1 representative and features from Giggs, Blade Brown and Angel. The mixtape shows Gunna’s development as an artist and a mature perspective on life…

Last week he also dropped the video to a track off the tape ‘Music Therapy’ which features BBK’s Skepta. Make sure you check out both.

This is one a lot of UK rap heads have been waiting for and it’s from Mashtown’s J Spades. ‘More Money More Pagans II’ is the second installment and follows on from the success of the first ‘MMMP,’ which threw the UK rap scene into a frenzy in 2012. The 19 track tape features some of the cream of the scene including Joe Black, Cashtastic, Chip, Blade Brown, DVS, Margs and more.

Now it’s time to look at new tracks/videos. South London’s Colours brought out a new one called ‘Lil Skeeza’ over an up tempo hip-hop instrumental with hard street lyrics. He is due to be releasing a mixtape soon, so look out for that.

We’ve had a few covers this week, the first notable one is from brother’s Mega and Mayhem who make up rap duo S.A.S. releasing their take on the classic Camp Lo record ‘Coolie High’. The track has a nice relaxed, summer vibe to it and the guy’s own insightful lyrics.

We had the lyric video first, then Sho Shallow decided to put a video together of his cover of Wale’s ‘Bad’. The track really shows the Brixton rappers talent as he puts his own spin lyrically on it.

There’s been a few live acoustic versions of this doing the rounds, but for this one Akala and Josh Osho took to Virgin Red Room for a live sessions with a full band for ‘Lose Myself’ off his newly released album ‘The Thieves Banquet’. The track is one of my favourites and has a massive rock and rap influence.

Giggs put out a short advert titled ‘Warning’ for his forthcoming ‘When Will It Stop’ album which is causing quite a buzz in the lead up to the release. The advert shows Giggs ironing to one of his tracks saying into the camera ‘When Will It Stop is round the corner lads’. There are many including me that can’t wait for the album.

After the horrific news a few weeks ago of the killing of solider Lee Rigby, emcee Boya Dee witnessed the account first hand in Woolwich tweeting it as it was happening which led to him being hounded by news teams. Last week he took to Channel 4 News, releasing a ten minute video taking camera crew on a tour of the area speaking to local people. The footage included rappers Mynature and Saskilla. You can check it out online.

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

I’m back after a week away sunning myself and sightseeing in Egypt and am ready to kick offThe Wrap Up‘s Rap Rundown again. I’m going to start with the man who excites most in the rap game; Mic Righteous. The Margate rapper released the visuals to ‘Up All Night’ taken off his recently released ‘Open Mic’ EP. The track is produced by TDH (Tom, Dick & Harry) and I like the grittiness of the video compared to most we see…

We caught a sneak peek of Sho Shallow’s new video ‘Bad’ as Rap Up UK released a behind-the-scenes video. The Brixton emcee reveals that this track was inspired by Wale’s ‘Bad’ because he liked the track and the concept.

Pound Sterling released his ‘Last Man Standing’ mixtape over a month ago and returned to drop a freestyle with a video spitting over Drake’s ‘5am In Toronto’ beat. This is one of my favourite freestyles I have heard as Pound Sterling sets some high standards with his flow and bars.

Paper Pabs from Bloodline took part in GRM Daily’s ‘Black & White’ where he talked honestly and openly about a few issues. One of the first things he questioned was “Is there even a grime scene? I think we need to rename it because I think UK rap is part of grime.” He went on to say they both need each other to balance and it needs to be renamed. What do you think?

USG’s founder Squingy released the video to ‘Rolling’ featuring Lefty. The instrumental draws you into the track instantly. The North West London collective are working on a USG album so look out for that coming soon.

As he gears up for the release of his new mixtape ‘King Of The Underground 2’, Joe Black drops a freestyle entitled ‘I’m Back’.  You might recognize the instrumental from K Koke’s ‘I’m Back’ track. Joe Black’s tracks always sound effortless and as he says in this freestyle, he makes it look like ‘light work’.

It is bank holiday next week so there are lots of events going on. On Friday, J. Cole will be hosting LoveDough which will see Cashtastic and Yungen performing on the night which takes place in Proud, Camden.

Saturday sees Musicalize return to Indigo2 and for me it is the best line up I’ve seen from this event. KanoK KokeTyler JamesSwayGhettsScorcher and Lunar C will all be taking to the stage in this not be missed night.

Streetfest is one of my favourite events of the year and sees an emergence of street culture come together in a car park in Shoreditch; music, clothes, art, skating and more. This year the winner of iTunes ‘Hip Hop Album of the Year’ Oddisee will be performing, supported by Dot RottenDJ Vadim, DJ Nikki BeatnikLivin’ Proof and Supa Dupa Fly.

Lastly, on Monday Link-Up TV will be having their first ever live show at XOYO in Shoreditch with a line-up so far announced consisting of Squeeks, G FrSH, J SpadesYungen and Lady Lykez.

I’ll be at all or most of these so see you there!

MTV Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

It has been over a decade since the crew first launched in the early 2000’s and last Thursday saw them reunite for the So Solid Crew Reunion Tour. The tour sold out and this was no surprise as the crew were instrumental in the development of the UK music scene. In particular, ’21 Seconds’ went straight to No.1, proving that this type of ‘urban’ music could reach commercial success and is still a well-known song in pop culture…

Ms Dynamite joined the crew for track ‘Envy’ getting the audience hyped to see the female MC joining the crew. Chip also joined them on stage and you could tell he was excited to be on stage with the crew who inspired him. Skepta unfortunately was meant to be performing with Megaman on ‘We Begin Things’ but police would not allow him into the venue.

Godfather of grime Wiley leaked what is set to be his last album ‘The Ascent’ nearly two weeks before its release date. His decision to do it was due to iTunes not letting him change something on the album and communication problems with his management.  Let’s hope his album sales still rocket as he deserves it.

Known for his hot freestyles and well-respected tracks, and with a constantly growing street buzz, Nines has always supported and represented his NW home of Church Road to the fullest. Unfortunately he is now reportedly in prison at Wormwood Scrubs for reasons unknown and unconfirmed at present. He tweeted “If it’s peak for me @ court make sure you give my new mixtape 2 skinny black and dem n***rs make sure I hear dat on da yard.” Let’s hope he’s out soon and we hear it too.

One of UK raps respected Fekky joined Charlie Sloth for Fire In The Booth, proving why he has earned this status and it’s not going anywhere. He lays down hard, truthful bars lighting up the booth.

Pound Sterling dropped his ‘Last Man Standing’ mixtape which sees a solid 19 tracks and contains some strong features from Skepta, Fekky and Jaja Soze. The tape shows his elevation and progress as an artist keeping the real, authentic rap there.

G FrSH released another video to a track off his forthcoming ‘Legoman 2’ mixtape. This time we see Sincere and Fekky join him for ‘18k’ with all of them dropping some big heavy-duty bars.

South London’s Political Peak has been on his grind, releasing quite a few videos recently. We saw him refix Drake’s ‘Started From The Bottom’ over a week ago. A day later and wasting no time he dropped motivational track ‘Get Money, F**k B***hes’ which saw another STR88CASH representative Kerz join him.

Meanwhile, Sho Shallow and Ard Adz have released the G.H.E.T.T.O EP – you can get the 13-track offering on iTunes now.
