Born & Bred Festival 2015 [Review] @bornandbredLDN

Born & Bred Festival set in Haggerston Park, East London was the first festival to take place by promoters Found who already host a variety of other festivals across London. This one was one made for me and bass lovers, as it specialised in Grime, Drum & Bass, Dub, Jungle, Garage and more with a plethora of artists with a distinction in each of those genres.

The four stages were prominent when we walked in, The Main Stage with headliners from different musical backgrounds, Just Jam (the Grime one), Swamp 81 (a music label set up by Loefah) and Wavey Garmz (a lot of Garage). Starting at 11am, I missed The Square, Grime’s favourite upcoming crew from Lewisham. Unfortunately this was a bit too early for me as I arrived at 2.30pm.

I headed straight for a drink as the sun was beating down on Saturday and needed to quench my thirst! Checking the line up on my phone whilst by the main stage I heard the sounds of The Heatwave for a bit who gave an Carival-esque set with Bashment & Dancehall blaring from the speakers and a host to who was getting the crowd hyped.

Wavy Garmz was where I went to hear some old skool riddims from the likes of Oxide & Neutrino from So Solid crew, who really took me back in time with their 2 step tunes and a crowd sing-a-long to their crew anthem from So Solid.

I headed to Just Jam to catch the mighty Sir Spyro on the decks drop some classic bangers, with ad lib Grime legend Flirta. The crowd was so hyped when he touched the mic. We headed back afterwards to watch one of Grime’s favourite and famous duos, Newham Generals who graced us with new tunes from their EP ‘N To The Gs’ such as ‘Levels’ and old school classics such as ‘Hard’ and ‘Streetfighter’. It was good to see people so enthusiastic about watching Grime veterans like these on stage!

I can’t forget watching Joker on the main stage who brought life to open air field at only 3.30pm in the afternoon, and then took it down to some tracks off his newly released album. He certainly had the audience going for one of my favourite sets of the day, Digital Mystikz (Mala & Coki) who had everyone in awe of their dub classic tracks and literally had everyone raving and pulling up tracks such as ‘Earth A Run Red’.

I caught a bit of Loefah’s set over at the Swamp 81 tent which was fully fledged with tunes full of synths and bass. I then headed back to catch a set I was really looking forward to, and that was Zinc’s Jungle set on the main stage where he played his classic track ‘Super Sharp Shooter’ and Chase & Status & Jenna G’s ‘In Love’. I didn’t leave as he played banger after banger and as Wiley was late had to extend his set (I wasn’t complaining).

rsz_11350587_10153396571637556_4569126580792607676_n

Wiley turned up to his headline, 1 hour set practically 45 mins late, with B&B announcing he was on his way, but really not many people believing and leaving the main stage area as Zinc had left and they had really messed with the atmosphere by playing commercial hip hop. Once on stage he performed ‘Chasing The Art’, ‘On A Level’ ‘Step 1 Freestyle’ and ended on ‘Heatwave’. I was pretty disappointed that he didn’t pull out more classics as this wasn’t really a commercial kind of festival, he could of left them for Wireless or whatever. The sound system shut off at 9 on the dot and the crowd were not happy with Wiley who later tweeted it was not his fault though “Yesterday I was actually on time . But my manager and Dj messed up this one . #Simples . I can take blame for a rusty start tho.”

All in all for the first festival of Born & Bred, it went really well with no trouble that I witnessed and was full of harmony. It’s tapped into a market that wasn’t delivering us the bass culture we needed all in one. Well done to Found, we salute you.

Pixies Tracks Of The Week @Sneakbo @theupbeats @Skepta @Meridian_Dan @WileyUpdates

Sneakbo & Kranium – Lifestyle Remix

South London rapper Sneakbo dropped his mixtape Jetski Wave 2 in February, which is one of the hottest of the year thus far and hosted by DJ Whoo Kid. This week we got the official video to the “Lifestyle remix” track off it which is my personal favourite off the tape where he talks about his life, his journey and his hopes, dream and ambitions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2NBEUg2XKs

Caribou – Back Home (The Upbeats Bootleg) (feat Voices)

New Zealand producer duo The Upbeats have taken Caribou’s rather relaxed tune “Back Home” and given it a sumptuous drum & bass remix with synths plus vocals from Voices, whilst still leaving the original coatings remaining the same. The build up to the drop is delightful, elevating to a sub bass that gradually comes in. The producers have also added an extra treat; the track is available for a free download by clicking here

Skepta – Shutdown (Idris Elba Remix)

You will recognise the name Idris Elba more from the acting world more than music, from an array of hit TV drama’s including The Wire and Luther along with films such as Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom and more being nominated for Grammy Awards too. He is a DJ though, under the moniker DJ Big Driis and has released tracks and has production credits to his name, so it’s no surprise really when he was asked to hook up with Skepta for a remix of Shutdown. Listen below and appreciate his bars as he goes in hard.

Meridian Dan – The Bits

Meridian Dan from one of Grime’s most well known crews, Bloodline has dropped a single titled “The Bits”. He signed to label PMR after a successful 2014 which included his single “German Whip” reaching the top 20 single charts. “The Bits” is produced by Tow Inch Punch and we can expect it to be on his forthcoming debut album ‘I Am London due later in the year.

Wiley – Wickedest MC Alive

As Wiley launches a new label Chasing The Art, he celebrates this by promising to drop a track per week for eight weeks which will be a project  titled #8. Kicking this off he started with “Wickedest MC Alive” which is self-produced and premiered by Annie Mac on the radio. Released on Sunday 7 June, with the follow up single “25 MC’s” dropping the following Sunday on “June 14th. This track resonates with his early 2000 material giving it a nostalgic feel.

Summer Tales At Red Market [Review] @nighttalesLDN

My friend asked me to go out with her one evening for food and drinks and so me being me decided to look for somewhere out of the ordinary, instead of just another bar or restaurant. I do love going to these food markets now on the weekends, especially the night ones as I am not really a day person. To my joy I came across this charming little gem in the heart of Shoreditch on Old Street called Summer Tales.

SummerTales

If you like eating and drinking under the stars and don’t mind potentially not sitting down and don’t mind a bit of a crowd well this is for you…these places are about the atmosphere and good cocktails and better food! As I walked in the theme of the place hit me in the face with big plants and a sandy area with deck chairs, it was of course tropical.

There was two upper decks too, with one that had a bar and fake grass with chairs and pillows that really matched the theme and on a day like luckily we had, was perfect for sitting upstairs with a cocktail in hand.

There are a small, but decent amount of food stalls, with quality restaurants such as Burger & Lobster, Bonnie Gull’s Seafood Shack, Forza Win and more. I have to say the pizza stall looked delicious and I will definitely be going back there.

Summertales2

This time though I opted to head to Burger & Lobster as I’ve never eaten in the restaurant. I decided to have a lobster roll (£10) and wondered how good it would be cooked at the street stall. It was pretty amazing, the lobster tasted fresh and the broiche roll was lightly toasted and buttery. The sauce in the lobster roll was so light and refreshing with chopped spring onions on top, it’s safe to say I will be heading to Burger & Lobster after that.

We headed to the deck upstairs to relax, away from the DJ area sponsored by Red Bull, as it was starting to fill up with people who wanted to dance the night away (well till 12am when it shut). The bar upstairs had to be my favourite, named Lazy Flamingo Bar it served some very delicious but deadly Black Tai drinks, and after 3 well that was it for us! Make sure you head down to this outdoor festivalish outdoor party, it’s on every weekend till August.

One To Watch: Zems (@ZemsArtist)

rsz_zems

I couldn’t find out much about Zems as there really isn’t a lot about this artist online, but after watching some Street Heat freestyles on Link Up TV, he was one who really caught my eye. After looking more into him, I watched a couple of other freestyles on another video channel DME, where he takes on the Fat Joe ‘My Mofo’ instrumental. The Islington rapper has got some serious bars with a sick flow which he can switch up, and displays clever and well thought-out punchlines. He oozes a confidence about him which makes his lyrics believable. This 17-year old from North London is due to be big! I’m looking forward to watching his growth and hopefully an official track from him soon.

Pixies Tracks Of The Week @KreptandKonan @AR15UK @NeroUK @JHusMusic @KingPMoney

Krept & Konan – “F.W.T.S”

As their debut album is fast approaching with its release in just over a month on July 6, South London UK rap stars Krept & Konan drop another video”‘F.W.T.S”. We will get two versions of this track though as the official one on the album – unlike this video – will feature Boy Better Know’s Skepta. For this track they take it more back to their roots and serve the streets.

AR15 Presents ‘Out In The Jungle’ ft Squeeks, Sneakbo, Dubz, Stormzy & Bigz

The AR15 mixtape is due to be one of the biggest releases of the year and features a whole host of the UK’s best rappers such as Skepta, Stormzy, Kano, Devlin, Wretch 32, Chip and many more. This is the second track to be heard from the tape and features an all-star cast with Squeeks, Sneakbo, Dubz, Stormzy & Bigz going verse for verse over a Nana Rouges produced haunting beat.

Nero – “Dark Skies”

Electronic music trio Nero drop a new track off their forthcoming highly anticipated album Between II Worlds. “Dark Skies” is the fourth track to be heard, and fans of Nero who have witnessed their live sets will recognise it as they have been playing it for a few years now. Full of metallic synths and vivid subs it has an eerie deposition, while still sounding futuristic. The album arrives August 28.

J Hus – “Lean & Bop”

You’ve heard this track on the radio after the audio was unleashed and it’s safe to say this is one of the biggest tunes of the year for many. Now “Lean & Bop” has a video and it features some well-known faces such as G Frsh, Krept & Konan and Tim Westwood who J Hus teaches how to do the dance too. The feel-good anthem features Doccydocs and is going to be heard everywhere this summer.

P Money – ‘My Lingo’

OGz P Money keeps up the good work rate and drops a new visual for “My Lingo” where he talks some home truths and encourages people to do better. The Thomas Mellor produced track is a cut from his forthcoming mixtape ‘Money Over Everything’ which is released on June 28th.

Pixies Tracks Of The Week @cashtasticmusic @Novelist @Kwabs @ClubsAndSpades1 @djzinc

Cashtastic – Reminder Flow

It’s great to hear new music from Cashtastic since he’s been living in Jamaica. He is sending a clear reminder that he is still dedicated to music. Toxic flew out to the Caribbean island to shoot the brand new video with Cashtastic in Spanish Town. His aggressive delivery shows his hunger and passion and that he isn’t going anywhere.

Novelist – Ignorant And Wot

South London MC Novelist is the future of Grime and this week dropped a new track “Ignorant And Wot”. The 18-year-old is full of potential and is turning heads everywhere with his flawless flow and realness in his lyrics that people can relate to. With many saying the song reminds them of Dizzee during his Boy in da Corner days. The dark beat is produced by Novelist himself and is going to be a classic track in years to come with , with him spitting about his block and getting some thoughts off his chest.

Kwabs – Fight For Love

Kwabs is one of our favourite singers out of the UK, an artist with such a refreshing sound and unique voice that’s full of power and soul commanding people to listen. This emotional ballad reminds us of an 80s track with a pop-sounding electronic production. The track is taken from his forthcoming debut album Love + War out on September 11th. This is definitely going on my playlist.

Clubs & Spades ft Tom Prior – Clearer Coast

Sheffield hip hop collective Clubs & Spades dropped their EP Deal Or No Deal today (May 17th) and on the same day their new video “Clearer Coast” with it. The track was premiered on Charlie Sloth’s Rap Show on BBC Radio 1 and then was chosen as his Record Of The Week for next week. Shinobi & Matic Mouth rap with a skippy flow over the eerie key led beat produced by Andy Nicholson and Jamie Shield.

Zinc – Hidden Track

This track isn’t exactly new as it was released on Zinc’s 2003 album Faster’but wasn’t available for download. After demand for the track he decided to put it up on Soundcloud as a free download. Let this drum & bass track take you back in time. Steeped in rolling drums with a melodic bassline. If you know about Zinc you know he has a long career in bass music and has been a key player expanding drum & bass, house and garage in the UK.

Andys Taverna [Food Review]

Looking for somewhere to eat this weekend? Well I have the perfect suggestion for you especially if you are a meat lover. Greek food is so tasty but has simple ingredients; it’s all about cooking with passion and buying good meat, herbs and vegetables. Most of their meat is grilled, just seasoned slightly with spices with olive oil and lemon juice and a few other things, but it tastes so good and is very healthy.

Andy's Taverna

If you go to Camden there are three Greek restaurants within half a mile radius of each other, and they have been there a long time, which is always a good sign. I headed to Andy’s Taverna, when I entered they asked if I had a booking, I didn’t and it was already busy at 7pm, but they were able to accommodate. You could smell the grilled meats from outside! The restaurant has been open around 60 years and is known for it’s traditional values. They even get their seabass from Greece every two days.

As we settled into our seats and ordered house white wine that was good wine for house, we set our eyes on the menu. As we weren’t super hungry we decided to share a starter and a main. Choosing grilled aubergines (£4.50) to start, which I have to admit are my favourite vegetables and I love the simplicity they are cooked which just a little bit of olive oil and oregano. They were so buttery and soft and tasted fantastic, as well as being good for you! Can’t go wrong. I was going to choose the spanakopita, which is my favourite Greek dish that is is a spinach and cheese pastry.

For the main we opted to go for the Bifteki, which is a ground minced meat pattie at under £10. The portion was very generous and I’m glad I was sharing it as I hate wasting food and I wouldn’t have been able to eat this on my own! It came with a large Greek salad on the side and we ordered fresh bread to eat with it too. The meat was sumptuous and moist and was bursting with delicious flavours such as a bit of garlic, oregano, thyme, mint, onion and olive oil.

rsz_fullsizerender

The six good-sized patties were served topped with grilled halloumi and a grilled slie of tomato. It was literally like heaven on a plate! The Greek salad was fresh, crunchy and delicious but for me was missing onions. Everything else was perfect.

It’s no wonder Andy ,which has many celebrity diners as well, has been here for 60 years. The service is friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed and the food is to die for. I almost forgot to mention as well they gave us complementary after dinner drinks and sweet pastries at the end of our meal which is always a plus. It’s very hard to find authentic Greek food in London but I truly recommend this and will definitely be back soon.

Pixies Tracks Of The Week @EdSheeran @Kreptplaydirty @konanplaydirty @JMEBBK @OfficialChip @Modestep

Ed Sheeran – Photograph

Ed Sheeran drops the video to “Photograph” off his most recent album X. Known for his different and creative videos, this one takes us through his past to present with clips from home videos of his life. The video matches the song perfectly, and also shows Ed playing instruments which is especially cool as we get to see him as a youth in his element.

Krept & Konan – Freak Of The Week ft. Jeremih

Krept & Konan are due to drop their album The Long Way Home in two months and this is the second track to be heard off of the new project after “Certified”. “Freak Of The Week” sees them collaborate with American singer Jeremiah over a DJ Mustard and ADP beat. The two South London rappers bring the heat in what will definitely be a summer banger.

JME ft. Giggs – Man Don’t Care

BBK’s JME released his brand new album Integrity which hit a very commendable no.12 on this weeks official album charts. The “Shut Your Mouth” MC released a video the same day as the album for the monster track “Man Don’t Care” featuring UK rap God Giggs and produced by well known grime producer Swift Beater. JME is as cheeky and witty as ever with his bars which he shows off impressively on this tune.

Chip – Feeling Myself ft. Kano & Wretch 32

Chip was given a challenge from KFC as part of their new campaign #PackedMoreIntoLunch where they are encouraging people to use an hour of their day in a productive way. He took new single “Feeling Myself” off his brand new EP Believe & Achieve – Episode 1 to shoot, edit and put out this music video in an hour and this was the result.

Modestep – Machines

Last but not least, Modestep the electronic/rock group two weeks before their album is released have dropped the video to “Machines” with zombie eyes and a very dark video to match the track. Their album London Road features Big Narstie, Flowdan, Frisco, Lay-Z, Discarda and production from the likes of Funtcase and Trolley Snatcha.
