MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

Myself and The Wrap Up’s editor went to Funny Tummy’s art exhibition on Sunday (16), which was held in the Royal Albert Hall. The artist rose to fame after creating an illustration of Rihanna which led to her wanting to find out more about him. He has since worked on art for Adidas and Universal and has done covers for music artists such as Tinie Tempah and Wretch 32. Artists present at the private launch were Wretch 32, Chip, G FrSH, Fuze BW, Mayhem and more…

I spoke to G FrSH and he said: “I think there is a big market for ‘urban artists’ art; it’s objective, it’s in the eyes of the beholder, so it doesn’t matter where it originates from… as long as it gives you a feeling you like or enjoyment.”

Look out for the review coming soon…

G FrSH is a name who has been on everyone’s lips recently. The rapper, who is part of the Disturbing London family, recently released his ‘Legoman II’ mixtape and last week took to Noisey to give them the exclusive of a slick visual off the tape for ‘Never Can I’.

In an exclusive freestyle for Virgin Red Rooms, lyricist Akala was given certain words he had to include in his bars; oblong, symbiotic, condominium, poached eggs, phoenix and disruptor. They weren’t easy words, but of course Akala made it look like light work.

South London’s Marshall McFly gets his iRecords label mate Dru Blu to feature on latest track ‘Cops and Robbers’ along with Youngs Teflon. This is a big street track and all three spit hard and fiery verses with strong deliveries.

From Geko’s debut mixtape ‘Voice Of The Future’ which was released in December comes the video to ‘The Note’, a mature and well-developed track from someone so young. Happy sweet 16th to the rapper, whose birthday it was last week.

I heard rumours last week of a few covers of Naughty Boy’s hit record ‘La La La’ which are going to be released; but not by singers. Chip then released his version, tweeting: “Congrats to @NaughtyBoyMusic on a #1 BANGER. #TeamChip here it is #ChipLaLaLa Remixhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=oxBMor8RJ5Q … RT”

Sho Shallow tweeted: “Shouts ‪@NaughtyBoyMusic n he’s song La la la! Me & ‪@ArdAdz Gotta Spesh Cover Soon Out”

Naughty Boy responded via Twitter, saying Chip’s version is ‘very sick’. Expect to see more covers of the no.1 hit to follow.

Until next time…

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

North London rapper Chip was happy last week as mixtape site DatPiff gave his ‘London Boy’ mixtape a gold certification. He tweeted “#LondonBoy GOOOLD on @datpiff. That’s sick to know 100,000 people on one website checked out my music. Thanks to everyone for supporting.” The mixtape, which featured Grand Hustle members T.I , B.o.B and Iggy Azalea, has put Chip in an extremely good position for the future…

Sway got everyone talking last week as he dropped the video to his latest track ‘Still Sway and Kane’. Sampling Dr Dre’s ‘Still Dre’, he definitely impressed a lot of people with the track, which featured Kano and Tigger da Author.

Sho Shallow and Ard Adz have kept the consistency flowing as they released another video last week from their ‘#Ghetto’ EP, which is out soon. ‘Windy’ shows the two rapping about certain sacrifices.

Chiba dropped an old school Fekky freestyle, proving why he is one of the hottest rappers around with some timeless bars.

It was his 21st birthday last week which is cause for a huge celebration, but as well as that Yungen decided to drop a net video entitled ‘21’. This guy doesn’t seem to rest, even on his birthday.

There have been two mixtapes last week that caught my attention….

North west London’s Naf Skrilla has been a name on a lot of people’s lips for over 10 years now. After much anticipation he has released his latest mixtape ‘Doely’ as a free offering, with 22 solid tracks. Riddled with stories, this tape will keep the streets on their toes as he brings back raw and authentic rap.

S.A.S dropped the B Side to their ‘Coming To America II’ mixtape with guest features from Nicki MinajItsNateBigzMclean and more. Hosted by Big Mike, DJ Allure and DJ Snips, the 13-track tape shows why Mega and Mayhem have been a staple part of the UK rap game for years and will continue to be.

MTV The Rap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

I hope everyone has been enjoying the snow over the past few days; last week was pretty jam packed and we have a few good events this week to look forward to! It looks like Chip has been having a hard time with singers recently, as he tweeted last week: “Hollering at singers for hooks does get long after a while. Time to start singing them myself here and there. #onthescene #actionman #GDS”

The Grand Hustle signee also headed down to Madame Tussauds last week, releasing a video unveiling East Coast and West Coast rap greats, Tupac, BiggieP. Diddy and Snoop Dogg. Alongside it he wrote, “I wasn’t really allowed Biggie or Tupac’s music as a kid. The first I think I bought Biggie Smalls ‘Ready to Die’ and ‘Life After Death’ at the same time, I bought both at an age when I was actually allowed to have them as music on my own.”

Last week saw more videos from the USG collective. One from the youngest member Geko, who dropped ‘Night n Day’ off his recently released ‘Voice Of The Future’ mixtape. K Koke’s visuals to ‘Real Right Now’ from the ‘Pure Koke Vol 3’ mixtape was also released, as well as the behind-the-scenes to his latest single ‘Lay Down Your Weapons’ with Rita Ora – the video for that is out now.

A track for the streets and a big collaboration is also here as Pound Sterling joined Jaja Soze to talk about being ‘Real OGs’. Sneakbo has definitely been putting in the work this year, as we saw him drop the third video from his forthcoming EP ‘Certified’ recently.

SN1 representative Gunna Dee also has a mixtape coming out on January 31 and gave us a video from it – ‘4 My Town’ features singer Loick Essien and is produced by Wizzy Wow. This is a banger and I look forward to listening to ‘Hustler By Nature 2’ when it drops.

Cashtastic is back with Steel Banglez, who produced most of his tracks for their first one of the year, entitled ‘One Day’ which features three great vocalists – Abel MillerA.R.I and Akua.

Black The Ripper headed to Amsterdam to shoot the video for ‘You Will Never Know’ which is one for the smokers and the first track to be heard from his forthcoming EP called ‘Married To Marijuana’ – the EP will drop on January 31.

There are a few good events happening this week – weather permitting I will be down at I Luv Live tonight to catch Ard Adz and Sho Shallow, alongside singers Tom Prior and Bobbi Lewis.

Saturday will see Musicalize go down at the o2 where you can see Chip, Krept & Konan and Professor Green take to the stage. See you there!

LIVE REVIEW: RED BULL CULTURE CLASH (LONDON)

It was the biggest music battle to hit London this year and only one sound system could win. The rules were simple; four rounds which are 15 minutes long, you have to save the special guests and the dubs until the last round, you can’t play a tune that’s been played already and the winner is crowned from the decibel reading at the end…

Even though the rules were simple, Major Lazer played as if the rules were there to be broken, playing dubs and bringing out special guests before the end round. Round one kicked off with Channel One bringing roots and culture to the clash, moving on to Annie Mac who kicked off with tunes like ‘Clique’ and ‘212’.

Major Lazer played a Bruno Mars dub on the first round and then dropped their hit ‘Pon De Floor’, starting the first round off with electricity. Diplo also got into a massive blow up see-through ball and tumbled across the crowd in it.

Boy Better Know’s first round was so hyped; playing the biggest and best bass instrumentals from Pay As You Cartel’s ‘Know We’, Faze Miyake’s ‘Take Off’ and Breakage’s ‘Hard’. Just from the first round alone, I thought it was going to be Annie Mac or BBK who was going to win.

The second round is where it got tense, with Major Lazer playing more dubs and also bringing out Stylo G. BBK weren’t happy, as Skepta said: ‘You’re not meant to bring out special guests till the end, Major Lazor better turn their lazors off!”

Wiley’s hits ‘Heatwave’ and ‘Can You Hear Me’ were played in round two and the man himself also jumped into the crowd, giving fans a special surprise. P Money also MC’d over some dubstep on Annie Mac’s set. BBK got more upset on round three, with JME warning his competitors, saying ‘I’m gonna slap someone!’ Channel One also stepped in saying, ‘Major Lazer don’t disrespect, have some respect for the artist dem.’ Round three was called ‘Sleeping With The Enemy’, which meant they all had to play the sounds of an opponent’s sound system.

Round four was the time to get serious, where contestants brought the disses, the dubs and the guests. Major Lazer brought out impressive guests Rita Ora and Usher, which saw Rita have a wardrobe malfunction and revealing a boob! Usher performed ‘Climax’ with Diplo remixing it to a reggae version.

Annie Mac presented us with remarkable guests, including Maverick SabreKaty BMs Dynamite and Example. BBK got came with a Giggs dubplate, also bringing out their guests Lethal B and Chip.

BBK were crowned as the winners, but I think Major Lazer’s screams were bigger and Annie Mac played more of a variety – but you can’t win when rules are broken so they had to go home empty handed. Congratulations to BBK who played fair and came with wicked tunes and entertainment.

MTV Wrap UP: UK Rap Rundown [News]

Nas was in London last week to play three intimate shows and brought Wretch 32 and George the Poet for support, which saw them both perform at one of Nas’ shows in Shoreditch, showing the exceptional lyrical talent the UK has to offer…

Meanwhile, one of UK raps most talked about artists at the moment will soon have something new for us; J Spades is hitting the studio tonight as he announced on Twitter that he will be finishing off an exciting new track: “Studio tonight to finish up that new  ‪@REAL_JSPADES and ‪@WackaFlocka tune! ‪#Bricksquad ‪#MMMP! #MMMP2 coming soon!” As he mentioned in the tweet, his new mixtape ‘More Money More Pagans 2’ will be coming real soon.

Chip also took to Twitter to tell us when his anticipated mixtape ‘London Boy’ is due out and also revealed details on the next project that he has in store for us: ”‪#LondonBoy 25th December !!! FREE MIXTAPE #PizzaBoy feat. @MeekMill up next… Shutting the clubs DOWN!!!”

I previously filled you in on Rapper Tag UK; an online cypher that started with Mystro. The last one ended with M9 aka Melanin 9; their latest video is up now and sees Hackney MC Cyrus Malachi spit some bars. It is also Rapper Tag’s first birthday – we wish them many more years to come!

As well as K. Koke’s ‘Pure Koke Vol. 3 ‘dropping last week, the USG rapper also got airplay for his debut single ‘Turn Back’ featuring soulful singer Maverick Sabre. The track is about his struggles and samples Sting’s track ‘Shape Of My Heart,’ which Nas also used on ‘The Message’. The video will be dropping soon.

USG boss Squingy was joined by members Exo and Lefty to bring us the theme tune ‘Money On My Mind’ to the forthcoming movie ‘Fedz’. The soundtrack will also include tracks from J Spades, GiggsMargs, DVS, Joe Black and more.

South London’s Colours Miyagi has returned from a short hiatus to bring us a brand new track ‘Burn’, showing us that even though he has been away, listeners are “locked down now I’m back”. His lyricism and flow has developed into something more special; other rappers can learn a thing or two from this one.

Political Peak has dropped two tracks this week in the lead up to his ‘Dreams 2 Reality’ mixtape. ‘Wise Up’ was the first one to be heard featuring Ard Adz and Blacker. The next was ‘Dreamin’, an emotional track featuring former Sugababes member Keisha Buchanan who add a nice touch to the song with her strong vocals.

Until next Monday!

G Frsh ft Chip & Sneakbo – I Got It [Music Video]

G Frsh has some help from Chip and Sneakbo for his track I Got It which shows them in the studio together for the video, and is taken off the forthcoming Legoman II mixtape.
