MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

There was a few bits of bad news last week as Giggs took to Youtube to announce that the police had cancelled his show at Under The Bridge. The news was upsetting as it gave his London fans the opportunity to hear him perform tracks off his new album out today ‘When Will It Stop’. As Giggs says in one of his lyrics on track ‘Slow Songs’ “They talk about they wanna cut crime down, I do something positive and they fly down”. This was a direct statement about how the police are trying to hold him back. Fortunately he has too many fans and supporters for that to happen! So support real rap and go and buy the album now.

On Saturday night Giggs also gave BBC Radio 1/1Xtra DJ’s Mistajam and Charlie Sloth two exclusive plays. To Mistajam he handed ‘Mr Kool’ featuring legendary singer Anthony Hamiltonwho lent his soulful voice produced by J.U.S.T.I.C.E League for a cool laid back 70’s vibe. Charlie got the harder cut ‘What It Gets Like’ featuring another legend in the game Styles P.

The second bit of bad news came from J Spades who took to Twitter and Instagram yesterday to announce he was moving away for music. Permanent or not it has not been confirmed. He stated on Twitter,

“They keep cockblocking the movement! Pity the fans don’t know wagwaan but I’m sure they gonna start asking questions soon!”

“1 more cd then I’m out! Goin to have fun somewhere else! Lol ‪#PowerMoves”.

On Instagram he wrote “right now my mind state is to step away from music! The industry is too fake & full of sh*t! #NewMoves #BusinessVentures”. Hopefully we’ll hear more on the situation soon, and that the Hackney rapper will change his mind.

Heard of Little Torment yet? Well he’s one to keep an eye out for right now. Last week he dropped the visuals to ‘So Close But So Far’ with the video looking like it was shot in the summer with a BBQ and drinks and generally nice vibes. The track is taken from his ‘Behind Closed Doors’ mixtape.

Little Torment also featured on Harry Shotta’s track ‘What Would You Do’ which was off the ‘Twelve Months’ mixtape. The track questions and looks at complications within the music industry and issues that can hold people back or make them untrue to themselves.

One of iRecords team Young Mad B dropped the video to ‘Big Homie’ off his forthcoming mixtape ‘MV3 Stress Relief’. The track is quite though provoking, expressive and moving.

Police Cancel Giggs Show

The news that Giggs show has been cancelled due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’ was released on Under The Bridge’s Twitter earlier today.

1157563_10151802865049819_1853689708_n

Giggs then took to Youtube to release a public apology to fans and state that it was the police who had cancelled the show although they had given him the go ahead beforehand. They can’t stop the Monsta Man though as his album When Will It Stop, will prove to them he is an unstoppable force. Giggs keep your head up and keep doing your thing, they can’t hold a good man down for long!

When Will It Stop is out 14th October make sure you keep supporting Giggs and go and buy that I know I will.

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

There was very sad news last week that the young and talented emcee Depzman aged 18 was killed outside a nightclub in Birmingham. He was at the venue because of an event honouring another knife victim Kyle Sheehan who was stabbed to death last year.

A lot of people were stunned and deeply saddened by the news about the murder of the Invasion Crew MC with Skepta saying “So full of life, so hype, he could never be in a room and you not know he’s there, SICK MC, overly loved and looked out for his people Heavy black heartHeavy black heartHeavy black heart” and fellow Invasion Crew member Jaykae “I can’t stop crying I jus wanna wake up and wish this is all a dream I love you so much ‪@DepzmanInvasion.” Two men have reportedly handed themselves in to the police. RIP.

There were two fantastic Fire In The Booth’s that came out last week. The first one comes from one of the most on fire emcee’s in the game right now, Lady Lykez. She goes in so hard, showcasing her multi-dimensional flow and lyrics proving why she is one to keep an eye on.

The second one came from The Movement consisting of Ghetts, Scorcher, Wretch 32 and Mercston who reunited after years. Unfortunately there was no Devlin to be seen but it was good to see them back together again after six years. They took it old school with their bars and flow think Wretch in Combination Chain Gang.

GekoUSG’s youngest in charge released his first official single ‘Heartless’ last week, which went to no.12 in the iTunes chart. He dropped the video the next day and it landed on respected American hip-hop site HipHopDX, proving that good UK rap can be embraced by the US. ‘Heartless’ is a love story but not quite a nice one as it tells the story of the woman with a broken heart.

Squeeks kept things moving last week as he released the video to ‘My Scars’ produced by Westy, taken off his recently released huge 40-track mixtape ‘Presidental Musiq’. Squeeks shows off his gentle side in this one for his main squeeze.

Speaking of Squeeks since his falling out with Benny Banks that became public knowledge, there may be a collaboration between him and K Koke on the cards after he tweeted “RT IF YOU WANA SEE ME DO A TUNE WITH ‪@KokeUSG”.

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

There has been a lot of positive stuff going off this week in the world of UK rap. Firstly on Tuesday Team Wrap Up headed down to the MOBO Nominations launch where we saw performances from So Solid Crew and heard that AkalaK KokeWretch 32 were up for Best UK hip hop/grime act. Who do you think deserves to win? I know personally who I do…

Krept & Konan are the names on everyone’s lips right now as their ‘Young Kingz’ mixtape dropped and entered the UK official album charts at No.19, a huge, game changing achievement. They had a lot of tweets congratulating them from SkeptaZeon Richards, Fekky, and more. They were also nominated for best newcomers at the MOBO’s so get over to their site and make sure you vote for them. Check out their new video from the tape ‘Too Young’ featuring Yungen which is their third video from the mixtape to be released.

There were a few freestyles out last week that I recommend checking out. Firstly check out the Daily Duppy from Krept & Konan which saw Krept spitting over The Fugees’ ‘Ready Or Not’ instrumental, then Konan taking over with a more upbeat track. Mike GLC took to SB.TV to put out his second 3rd Degree with no instrumental just him talking straight reality.

Colours and Benny Banks took to Link-Up TV for a Behind Barz session. Colours showed impressive lyricism spitting over Jim Jones ‘Summer In Miami’. Benny made his return for the third time with his laid back flow over a funky, hip-hop beat.

Talking of Benny Banks him and Squeeks who were meant to be friends and are both from Islington, North London have took to Twitter dissing each other. Squeeks tweeted ‘The boy ain’t real & from time he signed 1 2 deals I can’t ere from n****s simple really that’s why I be like #F***Banks’. He then went onto say without him, Joe Black and Westy Beats Banks would be nothing. Banks last tweet on the matter was ‘Thank God for my haters!’

The only video really worth mentioning this week is Giggs new one ‘(Is It Gangsta) Yes Yes Yes’. The 9 minute long video featured some of his SN1 crew. Giggs is upping the levels in the UK rap game, everyone take notice.

Boom Bap Festival is on in a few weeks from the 13-15 September in Peterborough and I headed down to the warm up party at Vibe Bar on Saturday where I saw legends in the game Chester P and Micall Parkinson perform. If you missed it you missed out on seeing two of the best lyricists from the UK, so make sure you head down to the festival itself.

MTV The rap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

I’m back after a break last weekend for the Bank Holiday where Team Wrap Up headed to Reading Festival and caught some incredible performances from Giggs, Mic Righteous, A Trak and the massive headline set from Eminem. It was definitely the best festival I went to this summer…

Giggs has really taken it to a new level with his next video to ‘Is It Gangsta? (Yes Yes Yes)’ as we saw the trailer being released last week. This looks more like a movie then a music video and we can expect the Mark Ronson produced track to be released on October 6th, so watch out for that.

Disturbing London rapper G FrSH dropped a video from his recently released mixtape ‘Legoman II’. ‘Wings’ is produced by Goldielocks and features a healthy line up of some of the best in out scene; Mic Righteous, Fem Fel and English Frank.

French rapper Frenchy Le Boss hooked up with one of South London’s finest Sneakbo for ‘Jump In The Car’. I was looking forward to this release after watching the studio session and am 100% feeling this tune. The two rappers compliment each other so well and I really like Frenchy’s flow. This track is taken from the forthcoming mixtape ‘Ces’t La Vie’.

In the run-up to the release of their mixtape ‘Young Kingz’, Krept and Konan kept their fans happy by releasing another video ‘Don’t Waste My Time’. Taking it back to their roots with the hard hitting production and catchy hook, they really have showed their versatility recently which we will see more of on the tape.  The duo are set to be UK rap’s future stars, also previewing the mixtape online, hyping everyone for the release, which is today!

Top Boy hit our screens again for the second series and we’re onto episode two, so make sure you get watching as there is a whole host of new talent in this one including Cashtastic, Exo, Bashy and Lefty.

I’m going to end on a big release from last week and that comes from North London rapper who has impressed me for a while now, Squeeks. His mixtape has a massive 40 tracks and has some big features from Joe Black, Blade Brown, Youngs Tef and more. A lot of the production comes from Cakes and Westy who he was worked closely with previously.

Make sure you download ‘Presidental Musiq’ for free now!

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

Last week was a good week for the world of rap, especially for me live music wise, as I had quite a busy weekend. I went to the G-Shock Session’s on the Friday evening in Brick Lane to hear some quality live music. I caught Cashtastic, Baby Blue, Scrufizzer, Maxsta, old school legend Rodney P, Smiler and more perform. G-Shock always has the best when it comes to music and never disappoints…

Saturday and Sunday I was a V Festival, which is quite a ‘poppy’ festival but not enough for me to not enjoy myself. They did have K. Koke perform but he was the first act on Saturday and I didn’t arrive till late so missed him, but I did catch Yungen perform on Naughty Boy’s set so look out for that track.

Giggs released the album artwork, tracklisting and release date for his forthcoming album ‘When Will It Stop’ and all I can say is I’m so excited to hear this album (Giggs if you’re reading can I have an album listening invitation, please?). I genuinely can’t wait to hear the track with Styles P, and the one with Ed Sheeran will definitely be a banger too. To be honest I think all of the tracks will be hot. October 14, hurry up!

Colours Miyagi is back with another visual from his ‘Where’s My Money: Reloaded’ mixtape which has done really well and he’s keeping the buzz going with the videos. Even though ‘Like Me’ is a street track it’s one that the ladies can still get down to and could be heard in a club.

It looks like Squeeks is back on a roll too as he a few weeks back he gave us some new music called ‘Clean Cut’. This week sees him drop the video to a track called ‘This Life’ featuring Goldie 1 who I’ve been hearing a lot about. It’s good to see Squeeks back on his A-game in the lead up to ‘Presidential Musiq’.

Koder dropped a mixtape last week called ‘The Calm’. He is one to watch out for, and I had a quick chat with him about grime at Apartment 58. “I think everyone is scared right now; they’re scared of the competitive element which used to exist and was a big part of grime – like battling, clashing, sending for each other… that ‘I’m the best in the room’ effect.

“I feel everyone’s attention has kind of shifted; we’ve lost that core element – but I think it can be summarized by the word ‘scared.’”

Interesting and I think he has a point, what do you think?

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

This is another visual we have seen to be released from Young Don’s mixtape ‘Weather Man 2’, and he impresses again with ‘I’m About This Life’ as he heads to Miami to link up with US southern rapper Gucci Mane. The track is a heavy trap record with the pair matching the beat with some hard bars…

We also saw another UK US link up last week this time it was from East London’s J Spades and another rapper from Atlanta Waka Flocka. The southern part of America seems to really be liking the UK rap vibe as we’ve seen a lot of collabs from that part. The track is taken from Spades ‘MMMP2’ tape and whilst Waka was over here the visuals were shot.

A video came out last week of Brixton rapper Sneakbo in a studio session with French rapper Frenchy Le Boss. He has previously recorded tracks with Young Spray, DVS and Jaja Soze and Sneakbo obviously liked what he heard. The track there working on is called ‘Jump In The Car’ and is sounding like a banger. Look out for that coming soon.

G FrSH strikes while the irons hot and dropped a freestyle over his Disturbing London label mate Tinie Tempah’s new track ‘Trampoline’ which was produced by Diplo. He spits some hard bars over the popular track which is being played everywhere on the radio right now and reached No.3 in the official charts.

The last track I’m going to mention comes from one of my personal favourites Giggs. I was so excited to hear the first track from his forthcoming album ‘When Will It Stop’ as he took to his site to post a message for his fans, I’ll let Hollowman do the talking.

“What’s good to all my supporters out there, since my last album a lot has happened. As you all know, with me getting locked up and everything it’s been quite a f**ked up journey but at the same time I thank God for giving me a second chance at life. Everything happens for a reason. I also wanna thank every single one of you for keeping the faith and not giving up on me. Trust me it means more than you could ever imagine.

“I hope you have enjoyed all the new music I have been giving you to warm things up but now it’s time to stop f**king around and start getting into the new album “When Will It Stop” so without further ado I feel that I owe it to you to, to personally give you a taste of my first single off of the new album. So here it is “(Is It Gangsta?) Yes Yes Yes” produced by Mark Ronson.”

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

I flew out to Ayia Napa in Cyprus on Monday afternoon for the Summer Love Festival presented by DJ Cameo. Held on Makronissos Beach on Tuesday, some of the biggest names in music performed including Tinie TempahG FrSHAngel, Fekky, Dot RottenScrufizzer and more. The festival was a great success and it’s always nice to attend one on the beach in the sun! I also hit the afterparty at Club Ice where Ms Dynamite performed…

Sneakbo has kept the visuals coming from his ‘Certified’ EP and yet again has come with a hard beat from Rvssian on ‘Trust Nobody’. He also proves why he is one of the finest rappers at the moment in the UK as he spits some honest and harsh truths.

Young Don released the first video to be taken from his forthcoming mixtape ‘The Weather Man 2’ over two weeks ago. The tape will be hosted by DJ Khaled who is quite a talked about man at the moment after his marriage proposal to Nicki Minaj. For this track Young Don is joined by rapper Smiler and singer Starboy Nathan in this classy visual where they are seen on a private jet sipping champagne for this nicely flowing track.

This week sees another remix of Migos’ ‘Versace’. This time it’s from a West London artist who is one to watch in the UK rap game. Shizzle shows why on this track reaffirming his status with clever wordplay and a relaxed flow.

Ghetts really shows a different side to him after his short hiatus from making music, slowing things down but still oozing passion for this spoken word introduction to his forthcoming project ‘Rebel With A Cause’. Mr J. Clarke takes us on a reflective journey of his life in this mature and poetical piece called ‘Definition Of A Rebel’.

Chip’s been floating around releasing a few freestyles and net video’s but nothing too serious. It’s good to hear he’s fully back on track and working on a new album in LA. Yesterday saw him put out the audio to new track ‘Holy Water’ which sees him looking back on his life, career and decisions he has made and also the future. His lyrical ability is as strong as ever in this track.

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

Colours is one of the most respected and best road rapper to come out of London, so when he dropped his mixtape ‘Where’s My Money Reloaded’ he sent the internet ablaze. Respected UK DJ’s Charlie Sloth and Ras Kwame have backed the 22 free downloadable tape which has features from K Koke, Stylo G and Gyptian. He also released the video to ‘Everything’ sampling Mariahs ‘I Give My All’ and like the mixtape sees him spitting nothing but real, life-riddled bars.

Young Don is gearing up for the release of a new mixtape the follow on from his last one The Weatherman, coming back for Part II this time with DJ Khaled hosting. He gives us a teaser of what to expect by dropping the video to ‘Harder Than Them’ a street track which we can assume to be on the tape.

At only 21, Lady Lykez is one of the best the UK has to offer in terms of her witty lyricism, her new track ‘I Love My Butt’ is no different. Topman described it as ‘a hip-hop party cut of the summer’ and she has had artists Lady Leshurr and Blizzard tweeting about it. Make sure you check it out.

Brixton rapper Sho Shallow along with partner Ard Adz puts out video and track after track, constantly impressing with not only the quantity but quality of their work too. This time Sho Shallow goes solo for new track ‘Intro’ which is the first track off his forthcoming mixtape ‘Girls In The Middle’.

Cashtastic released the visuals to ‘London Summer Day’ giving his fans something to enjoy now the sun has finally graced us for the summer. We heard the track last summer, but it doesn’t feel old with Cash tweeting, “Big up ‪@RAPCITYTV we shot this ‪#LondonSummerDay video last year, put it out a year later and it’s still fresh!”

Rap Up UK discussed the subject of haters in their recent mini documentary. They talked to artists such as Dru Blu, Margs, Political Peak, Pak Man, Fem Fel, Pound Sterling and more talking about the reason for haters such as people not wanting you to do better than them and how with success comes jealousy which breeds hate. What’s your thoughts on haters?

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

Last week I was out in Los Angeles for the BET Awards with The Wrap Up’s editor. We were lucky enough to see Beyonce perform her first show on her North America Mrs Carter tour, before going to a BET kick-off party at Drai’s Nightclub on the rooftop of the W Hotel. We also attended an amazing BET after party hosted by Chris Brown, where we saw rapper Problem perform…

We also spoke to many celebrities on the red carpet at the awards including Elijah Blake, Bridget Kelly, DJ Drama, French MontanaElephant Man, 2 Chainz and more as well as spotting Pharrell, Chris BrownKendrick Lemar and Jamie Foxx.

There have been a couple of notable mixtapes out this week. The first one comes from Church Road rapper Nines, who although is currently incarcerated, dropped ‘Gone Till November’ along with a video ‘Growing Up/ Back In The Day ’ on SB.TV’s channel. I’m pleased to see new material from the North West London rapper whose last mixtape ‘From Church Rd To Hollywood’ became an instant classic. Even if he is gone till November, this material is good enough to keep his fans satisfied until then, with personal and motivational tracks.

North London’s Young Spray has gained himself a high spot in the UK rap scene. Along with dropping strong projects consistently, his levels of hard content and lyricism have kept him a favourite in the UK rap game. ‘Hard To Kill Vol. 3’ is the latest offering and as ever, he delivers some hard hitting, powerful tracks just right for the streets.

Eurogang rappers Mega and Mayhem who make SAS have been keeping their flow of work consistent and last week dropped a slick video to track ‘I Am James Bond’ off their latest mixtape ‘Coming To America 2’.

Tinie Tempah has been abit quiet for a little while now and it’s been nearly three years since the release of his debut album ‘Disc-Overy’, meaning his fans will be pleased about the release of new material from his forthcoming album ‘Demonstration’. The East London rapper who has been doing extremely well worldwide is joined by 2 Chainz for the Diplo produced track called ‘Trampoline’.

Hailing from South London and in my opinion one of the best to come from there is DVS. He went back to BBC Radio 1Xtra to join Charlie Sloth for his Fire In The Booth freestyle show where he dropped some heavy weight bars, with subjects ranging from the roads to females. He is releasing a mixtape ‘London Boy, American Dreaming’ soon, so watch out for that.

Another favourite from South of the river in London is Sneakbo who has always managed to keep his work rate rolling. His latest summer club smash ‘Ring A Ling’ was released yesterday (July 7) and he has already given us a behind-the-scenes clip of his new video ‘I Don’t Trust Nobody’. Sneakbo again has come through with another strong certified street track.
