The Sounds Of UK Rap

Hardy Caprio ft. Not3s – Together

Hardy Caprio and Not3s have joined forces for ‘Together’, with Not3s bringing a heavy, catchy hook. The track, produced by N2theA, allows Hardy to flow effortlessly over the rap beat talking about money and street life. The video – shot in an estate – shows how it hasn’t exactly gone to plan, as they had to shoot without Not3s. The guys made it lighthearted with a script running through it that definitely makes you chuckle and includes some fun dance moves too! The track is taken from Hardy Caprio’s recently released The Hollywood EP which you can buy now on iTunes.

Don Strapzy – Mustard

Lewisham rapper Don Strapzy returns to our screens with ‘Mustard’ – a track full of bars on bars. Intro’ing the track stating, “I never did it for the fame G, I can’t complain now I get loving from the ladies, but I never done it for that,” the OG rapper then goes on to talk about everything from rappers to trappers to the hood, South London, trust, women and much much more. He shows off his powerful, natural flow with strong delivery coupled with braggadocious lyrics, “It’s donny from the manor I’m the dogs bollocks.”

Pep ft. Big Sneakz – One Time

Pep takes the cinematic visuals for ‘One Time’ to the stunning location of the Dominican Republic. The stunning backdrop seamlessly flatters Pep’s individual flow alongside Big Sneakz’s catchy hook. Opening up with a meeting taking place between Pep and an associate then leads into the track that talks through Pep’s situations with women. Self-produced by Pep himself, he brings a summer vibe to the steelpan instrumental.

Dims x Tremz – Bang For My Bros

It’s a Northern link up next in ‘Bang For My Bro’s with two equally hard rappers: Dims from Manchester and Tremz from Liverpool. The video fits the ominous mood of the track, with men clad in balaclavas and masks setting the scene. The trap beat allows the two to apply their inimitable melodic style rap which Dims uses on the hook as well as in his verse and Tremz uses in his verse too. Dims has a strong, aggressive delivery, where he talks about street life. Tremz comes in second rapping, “Way back I been a rowdy yout, cause I never knew the other way, so don’t ask me what the f**k I do.” This is Northern talent at its finest.

Potter Payper x Luey Locs – Last 32

Potter Payper is one of the best UK rappers; his wordplay, lyrics and flow are just impeccable. At the moment he’s gearing up to release a brand new project titled ‘Real Back In Style’ which we are hugely looking forward to. His new banger ‘Last 32’ with Luey Locs shows the two barring about their lifestyles, which include chasing paper, expensive tastes in watches and cars, smoking and more which the video portrays perfectly showing off some flashy cars, nice creps, women and icey watches. Watch out for more from Potter Payper in the forthcoming months.

Lil Nasty

On New Year’s Day, platform SBTV dropped 5 videos called ‘Better Place’ from five talented UK rappers. The conceptual tracks/visuals are about their specific and different areas they are from and how they feel about them. In a very poignant showing, (following the tragic death of his little brother Nico Ramsay), Lil Nasty – who is known as a Grime MC – brought ‘Better Place’ to Plaistow. It’s a tribute to his brother and is emotional and moving, with Nasty taking on one of his first ever rap tracks, and doing it justice. He opens ‘Better Place (Plaistow)’ saying “What happened to the fun times, now it’s all blades and gun crime, youngers on the front line, attitude is thug life.”

Blittz & Big Tobz

Blittz & Big Tobz are two East London rappers who quickly made a name for themselves in 2015, both singly and as a duo with their on point punchlines and memorable tracks. ‘Wicked And Bad’ is the latest release from the rap duo, and an enticing track to kick off their collaborative forthcoming project Case Closed, which is set to be released in August 2016. Case Closed is produced and will be released by The Heavytrackerz, setting a new benchmark for the rap game. This track is the perfect introduction to the LP with an enthralling beat and the hook, which embodies the title track.

Adian Coker

Adian Coker is no stranger to the hip-hop game – he first staked his claim in the underground with his debut mixtape release Lights Fantastic, with his follow-up Young World propelling him past that success. He now returns with his brand new track ‘No Angel’, with a sample of Madonna’s ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ and a glimpse of Kanye West’s ‘Can’t Tell Me Nothing.’ Adian laces the track with his deep vocals and dives straight into exploring and taking control of the production, with his lyrics using emotion, frustration and strength to bring inspiration. It’s just Adian baring himself to the world with no barriers to hold him back.

Avelino

Hailing from Tottenham, Avelino turned heads when he dropped his free collaborative mixtape with Wretch 32 titled Young Fire, Old Flame in 2015. This year is all about his own music though, which kicks off with ‘Welcome To The Future,’ produced by Raf Riley. It showcases his distinctive lyricism, signature wordplay and inimitable flow, and stakes his strong presence in the game where he has now become a successful artist after years in the underground. The track has got a futuristic and fresh sound to it and is just the start of things to come this year. He will be releasing his debut EP soon too so make sure you watch out for that.

Potter Payper

Essex rapper Potter Payper released his 7-track One Time EP on March 31st and also dropped a new visual off of their ‘Real Life (Black Impala).’ It’s the second visual from the EP, following on from ‘Normal’ (feat Maverick Sabre). ‘Real Life’ provides a soulful, contemplative glimpse at Payper’s struggles with the visuals ever-reflecting the lyrics. Potter raps, “Sugh Knight in this Black Impala, mob shit tryna jack him after. I’m too G I’m so Bush Obama,” over a guitar-led track. Potter is definitely one of the coldest UK rappers, with some of the realist lyrics. You can get his EP here.

The Sounds Of UK Rap @DonStrapzy_ @YungenPlayDirty @RealGeko @PotterPayper @akalamusic

I’m here to bring you some of the latest tracks and news from the world of UK Rap from the past two weeks. January was the warm-up month and now we’re in February it’s time for artists to really bring the heat.

Don Strapzy

Don Strapzy, a seasoned UK rap artist hailing from South London begins the year in the best possible way with brand new track ‘Enigma’ after dropping 3 covers in the month of January. Presenting the track with a key lead, ghostly beat, he showcases his laid back flow allowing his bars to be evident and heard intensely. Filmed in his hometown in Blue Borough, the visuals focus solely on him, as he takes us on a walk around his local estate, showing us the realness behind his lyrics “100 wraps in my shoebox, man I’m living comfy. Fuck it that’s a lie, man I’m still out here in my rusty.”

Strapzy also released the news of his first headline show at Birthdays in Dalston on the 21st April where he and some special guests (Ms Banks & TE Dness) will perform. This could mean we will see his debut album drop before then?

You can buy tickets for his show here.

Yungen

Yungen signed to major label Sony Records last year after his success was evident, releasing banger after banger and a successful headline show at the 02 Islington. The work never stops for the 23-year-old artist who always shows his consistency, year after year.

‘Comfy’ is the latest cut from the South London spitter, who brings us braggadocious bars, addressing his haters and telling us he’s secure. The video shot at night shows him and his crew, where he pays homage to Section Boyz, Stormzy and Play Dirty. It seems to have upset Chip who thinks he was sending for him on the track, with Chip highlighting it on Twitter and Yungen replying, “If I was sending for you I would have done it a long time ago.”

Yungen also announced his headline show, which is on the 25th April at Village Underground. I’m sure he will be bringing some special guests down too for an unforgettable evening. Get your tickets here.

Geko

Geko the Manchester-based rapper continues to show his hunger and passion for the game, releasing a few tracks already this year. We love seeing a young artist with so much fire in his belly, and who can cater to the ladies and the men with different tracks. His new one ‘Middle Fingers’ is sticking one up to the haters. It seems Geko has a lot he has to get off of his chest on a laid-back beat. He tells us how he thinks some ‘fake’ friends are using him, but fake love is better than none.

Potter Payper

2015 saw Peter Rosenberg of Hot 97 in America bring out Potter Payper at music event Pitched Up, co-signing the rappers credibility. A one to watch for 2016, Potter Payper returns this year with news of his brand new EP ‘One Time dropping in March. He releases the first visuals from the EP Normal featuring the soulful vocals of Maverick Sabre on a New Machine produced beat. The Essex rapper talks us through some real-life issues he sees in the world around him and how it’s normal for people going through them. It’s a reality track and showcases Paypers’s lyrical prowess and how it normal to be different. We can’t wait for his EP and more visuals to drop from that!

Akala

Akala sat down with the presenters on Not For The Radio, the online interview series that began last year and was very much needed for the UK ‘urban scene’. Akala is a huge voice and authority on many topics, not just music, but politics and history too. His intellect is not one to be messed with and on this interview he discusses in-depth confronting the EDL, the relationship with his sister Ms Dynamite, class, self-hatred and the benefits of being vegan. It’s a very interesting watch and shows Akala’s realness

Potter Payper (@ThePotterBk) – 24 [Mixtape]

This is one mixtape I have personally been waiting for for a long time. I named Potter Payper as my 5 emcee’s to watch out for this year last week, and this week he dropped his heavily anticipated 24 mixtape for the rap fans out there. He had a few good releases last year including video for Bandoe which is remixed on the tape and features Youngs Teflon, Bonkaz, Snow Team, Illmade and Sicker we also see other features on other tracks from Mark Asari, Keke and more.

PAyper

This was worth waiting for and a tape that will stick around on my iPod for a while to come and may stay a classic. He wasn’t shy to show emotion, and his pain and struggle really shines through.

Five Emcee’s To Watch Out For In 2015 – @IsaiahDreads @swiftsqueeze4p @Novelist @SNOW667 @ThePotterBk @sleeks300 @inchawali101

I’ve named 5 of my top five artists to watch out for in 2015. See who I think has what it takes below and why…

Isaiah Dreads

A 16 year old grime MC from the West Country. He can already add to his credits performing at Glastonbury, Wireless and Isle of Wight as well as being Zane Low’s ‘Next Hype’ & Mistajam’s ‘Radio Ripper’ for track ‘U See Me’ produced by Preditah. He’s also received co-signs from other radio tastemakers Toddla T & DJ Target. Watch out for more from him this year including a mixtape.

IsaiahDreads

Section Boyz

These guys have been on my radar for a while. A collective of rappers from South London including Swift, Deepee, Sleeks, Knine, Inch, Littlez & Reeko. 2014 saw them really cause a stir and got a lot more people taking notice especially with track ‘Delete My Number’ and mixtape ‘Sectionly’ making a big impact on the underground rap scene. 2015 should see the boys tighten up their game and really shine.

SectionBoyz

Novelist

I first met him in late 2013 and as I saw him freestyle in front of just a few people for a press day I was running I knew I was witnessing something special. Now he has everyone talking, the freestyle on Toddla T’s show over ‘Incredible’ was insane and he has released material on Rinse with Mumdance and now has signed to the legendary XL Recordings for new EP ‘1 Sec’. Founder of Lewisham grime crew The Square; they are essentially going to be the crew in years to come that rule.

Novelist

 Snowy

18 and from Nottingham, I spotted Snowy on social networks and a freestyle video on UGX with some of the other cities sick MC’s such as Dubzy, Vigilant and Fangol and DJ Cameo’s Gimme Grime freestyle alongside Manga and another that’s hotly tipped this year Izzie Gibbs. He really began to get recognition in 2013/2014 and in 2015 I look forward to hearing some really exciting new material from him. Go check out his soundcloud where you can hear two EP’s from him.

Potter Payper

This Essex rapper has been about on the underground for a little while, but incarcerations have held him back. 2015 should be his year and we will see a new project very soon to be exact 15/01/15 called ‘24’. Last year saw a host of videos and his mixtape ‘Training Day’ be released as well as an epic ‘Fire In The Booth’, ‘Crib Session’ on Westwood TV ‘Warm Up’ on SBTV and a lot more. On instagram we’ve seen potential collabs with Donae’o and Bonkaz. Watch out for him!

Potter Payper (@ThePotterBk) – Bandoe / We Good

Potter Payper is one to watch out for. Seriously. He is one of the best lyricists around and this track Bandoe/We Good is just another example of how well the Essex rapper can put together a track and visuals to match. The track switches it up half way through from talking about trapping to a female vocalist and PP spitting about a relationship.

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

We’ve been hearing a lot from the Disturbing LDN and Parlophone rapper G Frsh as of late, as he gets us ready for his forthcoming EP ‘Alfie’; slated for an August release. He gave fans a present in the form of a free download for new track ‘The Hardest Part’ which of course sees G hitting us with some hard bars, and Sonny Reeves (also signed to Disturbing LDN) providing him with the vocals over a laid back beat.

Fresh from his ‘Lost Soul’ mixtape release, North London’s Coops keeps the work rate levels high and drops another visual from the tape ‘Rap Masterclass’ which seems to be set in Amsterdam. Produced by Talos, this is another banger with an old school hip hop vibe from a very talented and rising lyricist that a lot of people are calling one to watch. Coops matches laid back flows and beats to deliver us something special.

Now if you haven’t heard of Potter Payper, honestly I don’t know where you have been. Fresh from his incarceration, he is back to tear the streets apart as he shows why he is one is one of the most respected MC’s as he takes to Charlie Sloth’s studio to give him a Fire In The Booth. His wordplay and flow is exceptional, and this is the standard other rappers need to be looking too. From Drake’s‘0-100’ to Robin Shulz remix of ‘Waves’ instrumentals, he keeps the levels high.

Blue Borough’s (Lewisham) Dru Blu takes a totally British phrase ‘Let’s Avit’ which is commonly used at football matches or by people to mean ‘let’s have a good time’ in excitement as the name for his new track. Great to see UK artists capturing their British roots and essence, and Dru entertains too with the visuals for the track. Nice work!

Big congratulations are also in order for Krept & Konan who flew out to LA for the BET Awards 2014and bagged the award for Best International Act: UK. They beat Dizzee Rascal, Ghetts, Tinie Tempah, Rita Ora and Laura Mvula.

MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

Last week was a bit quieter than usual as many people were working quietly behind the scenes for new forthcoming projects for example Peak’s new EP ‘Life’s Peak’ and Colours Miyagi ‘Sunshine & Rain’.

We saw a few video’s drop from the USG team last week and they also announced a new EP ‘Untouchable Street Generals’ will be being released on 31st March, a warm up before their full album.

Geko released his mixtape two weeks ago ‘Thoro In The South. The Manchester MC kept the buzz of this release going by dropping a video taken from the project of the same name. With no features from USG apart from one with Lefty, Geko shows his presence as an artist in his own right.

Squingy put out the video to ‘Like Me’ featuring Sky which looks like it was shot on a nice summer’s day in London. The content of the track helps you understand his and USG’s journey in music a bit better as he talks you through some of it, especially the struggle.

Part 2 of Essex rapper Potter Payper’s freestyle studio video was released to the public last week. He is very highly rated in the game right now, and will be a problem once he is released from prison. He released his first mixtape in Summer 2013 ‘Training Day’ which really caused a stir, check that out if you haven’t heard of him yet.

Brotherhood took to Link Up TV for their first Behind Barz freestyle and what a deep one it was. The sibling duo from Ipswich get serious as they discuss racism, enlightening people on their views. The pair are due to release their mixtape ‘Love Life Hate The World’ on March 9th, and from their impressive lyrics here it’s set to be a good one.

Lastly the list of the 2014 BOTB list was released last week and instead of gathering a panel to give the final list of the ten, the public were asked to vote on Twitter and the numbers were counted. The list should be revealed this week and I’m looking forward to seeing the shortlist and the discussions that come with it.

Potter Payper (@ThePotterBk) – Studio Freestyle PT.2 [Video]

Essex rapper Potter Payper is one of the rawest lyricists around at the moment and Part 2 of his studio freestyle is now out. I’m looking forward to hearing more material when he’s released from prison.
