MTV The Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

North London rapper Chip was happy last week as mixtape site DatPiff gave his ‘London Boy’ mixtape a gold certification. He tweeted “#LondonBoy GOOOLD on @datpiff. That’s sick to know 100,000 people on one website checked out my music. Thanks to everyone for supporting.” The mixtape, which featured Grand Hustle members T.I , B.o.B and Iggy Azalea, has put Chip in an extremely good position for the future…

Sway got everyone talking last week as he dropped the video to his latest track ‘Still Sway and Kane’. Sampling Dr Dre’s ‘Still Dre’, he definitely impressed a lot of people with the track, which featured Kano and Tigger da Author.

Sho Shallow and Ard Adz have kept the consistency flowing as they released another video last week from their ‘#Ghetto’ EP, which is out soon. ‘Windy’ shows the two rapping about certain sacrifices.

Chiba dropped an old school Fekky freestyle, proving why he is one of the hottest rappers around with some timeless bars.

It was his 21st birthday last week which is cause for a huge celebration, but as well as that Yungen decided to drop a net video entitled ‘21’. This guy doesn’t seem to rest, even on his birthday.

There have been two mixtapes last week that caught my attention….

North west London’s Naf Skrilla has been a name on a lot of people’s lips for over 10 years now. After much anticipation he has released his latest mixtape ‘Doely’ as a free offering, with 22 solid tracks. Riddled with stories, this tape will keep the streets on their toes as he brings back raw and authentic rap.

S.A.S dropped the B Side to their ‘Coming To America II’ mixtape with guest features from Nicki MinajItsNateBigzMclean and more. Hosted by Big Mike, DJ Allure and DJ Snips, the 13-track tape shows why Mega and Mayhem have been a staple part of the UK rap game for years and will continue to be.

MTV Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

Winter is officially here! The clocks have turned back and the weather last week was unbelievably cold. Myself and The Wrap Up’s editor Maz braved the cold on Monday for Clement Marfo + The Frontline’s show in Camden, where they were supported by Charlee Drew and Josh Kumra. The collective are known for their rowdy shows and this was one of the rowdiest I have been to yet! The audience got soaked as usual by Clements water throwing antics and there was a big moshpit before Clement tore off the ‘no stage diving’ sign and jumped off the stage…

On Wednesday night I was invited to Tzar’s listening party for his new joint project with VersA Beatz, ‘XO.VS’ at a luxury penthouse in Westminster. We were treated to drinks and a spectacular view as everyone including rappers BigzSmilerMega and Mayhem sat down and listened to the full-length project, which is an ode to the high life and true love for luxury possessions. The two are already working on a follow up to the project, so watch out for that.

Benny Banks warmed up for Pusha T last week, and although I wasn’t there, he performed his new track ‘Trouble’ which is currently floating about online.

The video to K. Koke’s first official single was released – and what a moment it was. The video was more like a mini movie, a tale of struggle which showed Koke’s ability to appeal to a more varied audience but without losing his authenticity. Rappers can learn a lesson from this, as he shows you don’t have to compromise who you are.

Steel Banglez got the first play of his new track ‘Wafey’ on DJ Target’s show last week; of course it featured Cashtastic who works with the East London producer on a lot of his own tracks. We also hear some bars from Margs.

Young Don and Fekky had a few releases last week. Young Don released the video to his collaboration with Fekky called ‘ Gwup Boyz’  from ‘The Weather Man’. The 13-track mixtape was released last week and features UK rap peers such as J Spades, SqueeksArd AdzSho Shallow and more. Fekky also dropped the video to ‘No Worries’ featuring Slic Vic – look out for it.

Political Peak released the video to ‘Times Have Changed’ featuring Tayong off his ‘Dreams 2 Reality’ mixtape that also came out last week. The 19-track free download includes features from DVSJaja Soze and Exo and is definitely worth a listen.

Until next Monday!

MTV Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

Hey, I hope you all had a good weekend – I did! Therefore, I am going to kick off with some good news this week. Hackney hip-hop artist Mikill Pane, who has worked with Ed Sheeran and Example, signed to Mercury Records last week. He announced the news via his Twitter and Instagram accounts, saying: “I moved to a new planet today. Proud to announce that I am now signed & I’m on Mercury Records…”

Mikill is said to be finishing his debut album ‘Blame Miss Barclay’,which we should be hearing before the end of this year. Congratulations!

Plan B has been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize shortlist for his third album, which was also the Ill Manors soundtrack – making history as the first ever soundtrack to get a nomination. The judges have praised the soundtrack to his film of the same name, calling it “a brilliantly visceral soundtrack to an angry, troubling and harsh picture of life on the underside of London in 2012.”

Fekky, who previously teamed up with DJ Whoo Kid to release his ‘Come On Den’ mixtape, recently released his video to ‘Bang’ featuring Young Spray and Frisco. He also announced that he will also be working on a joint EP with Slic Vic and has a track with Wretch 32 in the pipeline. Meanwhile, Young Spray took to GRM Daily to release a net video to ‘Away’ – a heartfelt track from the ‘Hard To Kill Vol.2’ mixtape.

Jaja Soze recently released his album ‘The Last Message’. He also dropped the video to his track ‘Street Paradise’, an inspirational jam; which hears him say: “The urban scene just gets nervous every time I speak and when they see me it gets worse they try and kiss my feet.” Jaja also joined Geko for his latest track ‘Slideshow’.

Play Dirty’s Yungen gave us the hard new track ‘Rapstars’, which hears him talks about the life he lives – “independent life no label.” The track is produced by Steel Banglez; sounding like an interesting fusion of rap, rock and electro.

Clixx brought us a beautiful live acoustic version of his second single ‘Only If You Want’, which features singer Jermaine Riley and is from the ‘XX’ mixtape. We should be hearing some new material from Clixx soon; he is definitely one to watch.

Last week K. Koke shot the video to his first official single featuring Maverick Sabre from his ‘I Ain’t Perfect Album’. Speaking on K. Koke’s online TV series, Maverick Sabre said: “I love universal music, music that can connect with everybody no matter what genre. I think there have only been a few rappers over time that can do that well.

“I think the best way through hip-hop you can do that is through pain and struggle. Everybody can connect with that to a certain level. People speak to the people.”
