MTV Wrap Up: UK Rap Rundown [News]

I headed down to venue Under The Bridge in Fulham last Thursday to watch Tinchy Stryder’s one man show. Considering we haven’t heard that much from Tinchy recently, his supporters came out in full force to watch him, letting him know they weren’t going anywhere whist they wait for his new album ‘Full Tank’ to be released soon…

I hit Scala on Saturday night for Harry Shotta’s birthday bash. It was a night to remember as artists from Skibadee to Flirta D took to the stage and got the crowd hyped up. If you didn’t go, you missed out!

Awards season has fallen upon us once again and this year we saw the MOBO’s being held in Liverpool on Saturday. Sadly I didn’t make it down, but Plan B deservedly won Best Hip Hop/Grime Act as well as Best Male.

The Urban Music Awards nominees have also been released, with Sneakbo up against Dot RottenSmiler and Maxsta in the Best Newcomer category. Best Male Artist sees Sneakbo, Smiler and Maxsta nominated again, this time up against Wiley and Devlin amongst others.

Best Hip-Hop nominees went to Professor Green, Plan B, Maxsta, Dizzee RascalSway and Lady Leshurr – this category has definitely got some tough competition. Klashnekoff’s ‘FTLT’ album is up against Plan B’s ‘Ill Manor’s and Krept & Konan are nominated alongside Clement Marfo + The Frontline and Rizzle Kicks for Best Group.

Mic Righteous brought us the 13th segment of GRM Daily’s new Daily Duppy’s series last Monday, spitting some honest bars. A few days later he then told us the ‘Thoughts Of A Dying Man’ in his brand new hard-hitting track produced by Red Skull Beats; he also released the accompanying video where we see him getting stabbed.

Speaking of deep videos, Youngs Teflon told the story of ‘Mellisa’ through a new video, showing a harsh love story which ends in the worst way possible.

Benny Banks premiered his new track ‘Trouble’ last week which samples late singer Amy Winehouse. The video was also released and sees Banks and his team in Amsterdam.

East London producer Steel Banglez met with longtime collaborator Cashtastic for his brand new track ‘Wafey’ which also features rapper Margs. The video dropped last night so make sure you check out this banger.

Charlie Sloth made Joe Grind and Steelo’s new track ‘Obstacles’ No.2 on the hood heat chart of his hip-hop show. This will be on the pair’s forthcoming collaborative album ‘Steel Grinding’, so make sure you look out for that when it drops.

Until next time!

MTV Wrap Up – The UK Rap Rundown [News]

To kick this week’s Rap Rundown off, lets talk gossip. Professor Green went on a bit of a Twitter rant last week, lashing out at his label, writing: “Why would your own record label hinder you? Answers on a postcard.” He then went on to say “Dignified silence is pointless. A rushed second single, the ‘Remedy’ video a month late and now similar problems with the ‘Avalon’ video unfold…”

Answering some people’s tweets, he added: “Just to reiterate something for the stupid, my problem isn’t that they take that money, it’s that there are people not working for it.” Obviously he was frustrated, but he did point out that “there are a lot of people who are amazing at their jobs @ EMI.” I think Pro G was just about to quit smoking and was rather stressed at the time, so maybe his label won’t take it to heart!

London has been buzzing with energy and major events since the Olympics began. On Saturday I went down to Puma Yard in Brick Lane to catch one of my favourite bands, Clement Marfo + The Frontline. They wowed the crowd yet again, bursting with energy and getting us all moshing. Professor Green headlined the gig; but we got a surprise as Usain Bolt turned up to DJ with Manny Norte. I also attended the RWD x Adidas party, which was at a secret location in Shoreditch. Performances there came from Wretch 32ScorcherBashy and more…

The USG team have kept the tracks coming strong, with Squingy releasing a track featuring Preecha entitled ‘Everyday’. Their youngest member Geko also released a net video for the track ‘Life Ain’t Easy’. It’s safe to say that the team are definitely putting in the work.

With the Olympics closing ceremony taking place and the Paralympics due to start, Calibar showed some love for his hometown, giving us ‘It’s A London Thing’ featuring Splurgeboys. We also saw an SB.TV Warm Up Session from him over the ‘Stay Schemin’ beat, where he spat: “Excuse me for being late on this beat, I’ve been away for half a year, meeting after meeting just planning my career.”Squeeks talked about the developments in his music career when he dropped the visuals to ‘Changes’. Political Peak had a similar theme in mind as he talked progress and perseverance on his new track ‘Tables Turned’, which is the first track from his forthcoming mixtape ‘Dreams 2 Reality’ which will be available on September 1.The rapper everyone has been talking about, J Spades, has been in the studio with Tinchy Stryder and they have already shot the video to their new track titled ‘Lead Role’ – make sure you watch out for that one coming soon!

Mobo Awards 2011 winners

My review of what happened when I attended the MOBO’s in Glasgow 2011…

Flavour magazine had a great time attending the MOBO awards 2011 in Glasgow SECC yesterday. The nominees were outstanding so the competition was tough. It was a great night of music and fashion, with the big winner being Jessie J who picked up 4 awards out of the 5 categories she was nominated in, including Best Album and Best Song.

Dionne Bromfield gave a stunning performance in tribute to late Godmother Amy Winehouse singing ‘Love is a Losing Game’ which gainned her a standing ovation.

The fans on the red carpet lined up and the biggest screams went to JLS, Dappy and Fazer, Rizzle Kicks and Tinchy Stryder who stayed signing autographs, taking pictures and talking to fans in the rain.

A lot of people were left disappointed that Wretch 32 did not win an award as Mann, Encore, and Dionne Bromfield were rooting for him before the awards took place. With Mann saying, ‘my homeboy Wretch 32 deserves to win, he has done amazing.’

Loick Essien who was up for Best Newcomer said before the awards took place, ‘I’m feeling great. I’m feeling amazing. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone perform. Everyones got their best attire on and everyones got there game face on.’

When asked what is his favourite memory of the MOBO’s, Chipmunk said “winning one when I was 17!”

Boyz II Men closed the show with their sensational old school performance of their classic hits End of the Road and I’ll Make Love to You.

MOBO founder Kanya King told CMU: “The excitement and atmosphere of our second year here in Glasgow has shown the love that the whole country has for MOBO. We felt so welcome the first time we came here, we didn’t think it could be topped. This year has been a phenomenal success and we can’t wait to return in 2013. It’s been a great event that has welcomed some exciting new award winners to the MOBO roll of honour including the global superstar Adele, the UK’s hot talent Tinchy Stryder and of course the fantastic Jessie J walking away with four awards”.
