Bayou Soul (@BayouCamden) [Food Review]

Southern American cuisine is something in London that is quite hard to come by, so while scouring the Internet for one I came across Bayou Soul which opened in June 2014, so is still fairly new. Located in Camden in Inverness Street the small door leads to a rather large restaurant situated in-between bars/restaurants and the inside was warming and inviting, as well as the staff.

We sat down and were told there were happy hour cocktails still available, but instead opted to share a bottle of the house white wine, which can often be unpleasant, but upon tasting it was crisp and fresh. The cocktail list was vast and you can also just come here to sit at the bar sample the cocktails and have some nibbles casually.

Looking at the menu full of Creole cooking that all looked comforting and heart warming it was hard to decide what to pick. For the starters we decided on the B.B.Q shrimps & biscuits and Louisiana crab cakes & crawfish beignets (fritters). The king prawns came on a steaming hot dish cooked in garlic, white wine and chilies with biscuits on the side to soak up the remainder of the sauce. The prawns were a good size for two sharing and were juicy and succulent and full of flavour. The crab crakes and crawfish beignet starter was slightly disappointing or us as the crab cakes were on the fishy side and the beignets were overly battered and I couldn’t see much crawfish. The mango salsa and avocado emulsion really helped the dish out.

For the main I was torn between the Gumbo; a slow cooked casserole, Louisiana style served with rice cooked with peppers, onion, celery and spices with a choice between prawn & chicken that I would have gone for, chicken & sausage or crawfish & catfish, Jambalaya with the same choice which is described as a Creole Paella or the lobster & crawfish mac & cheese. I chose the later which intrigued me and was under the New Orleans Mama’s Home Cooking section and was told by the waiter this is what he advises his customers to order.

My companion chose the buttermilk fried chicken with 3 pieces which is served with a side and homemade gravy. The lobster & crawfish mac and cheese pie was delicious, creamy and cheesy and the lobster and crawfish added that extra texture and taste that made a simple dish into something a bit more special. The buttermilk fried chicken was ok, not the best I’ve had and the skin underneath wasn’t crispy so that was a bit of a disappointment but the crispy layer on top was tasty and the chicken was moist, so I just picked the skin off.

The meal was a good price considering we had a bottle of wine and 2 starters and 2 mains and the food overall was a good quality. The kitchen also has ribs, burgers, steaks, and more to chose from and the variety of the menu is appealing. There is live blues & soul music on a Wednesday and Saturday which I reckon would be packed on those days. Bayou Soul is definitely worth a visit but needs some slight improvement on some of the food.

Clutch Chicken (@ClutchChicken) [Review]

My first blog of the year and I’m going to start by writing about one on my main passions and one I’ve never written about before…eating out. I absolutely love it to the point in my late teens/early 20’s my mum used to questions how I could afford to eat out (at good restaurants) at least 3 times a week. Admittedly I have slowed down now to about once a week or once every two weeks.

With the opening of so many American style diners and restaurants across London, Clutch has became one of them opening in mid 2014 off Hackney Road in East London and it has begun to rule the roost. It’s described by them as ‘The home of guilt free fried chicken’.

Looking at the menu which consists of brunch, dinner, sides and sauces it wasn’t too difficult to digest and they say it is a healthy way of frying the chicken with groundnut oil for you health conscious eaters.

Clutch

The concept is basically having three ways to prepare the chicken; a bucket with coatings of either sweet soy garlic or peppery buttermilk, love me tenders with either curry leaf & sesame or parmesan & lemon and wings with sour & spicy chilli or honey & sesame. We went for two half buckets with both flavors; sweet soy garlic and peppery buttermilk. We were debating over the love me tenders (goujons) with parmesan & lemon, as my friend so rightly put it “what could go wrong with chicken fried in cheese?”

The sides we went simply for one portion of twice fried fries and one of coleslaw. The sauces which were £1 each we chose roasted garlic & crème fraiche and chicken gravy. The sauces we chose went perfectly with the coatings we chose as the food arrived and we realised the peppery buttermilk which was a dry coating definitely needed the gravy and the chips tasted excellent with it too. The sweet soy garlic chicken was suited perfectly with the garlic crème fraiche.

I definitely favoured the peppery buttermilk chicken as I loved the crispiness of the batter with the tenderness of the chicken, whereas my friend favoured the soy garlic which was more of a sticky coating.

Drinks

The drinks menu was more painful to look at as it had so many good options of cocktails to choose from. We went for a simple elderflower and prosecco which was light and bubbly and went down a treat with the chicken.

Take note also there is a bar hidden away in a room behind the restaurant where you can also order food.

Worth a try?

We couldn’t even finish our chicken only eating 2 bits each from each bucket and taking 2 bits each home! The bill came to £30 each which is quite pricey but then we did have two drinks each too so it’s quite reasonable when you add that. The chicken is definitely worth the price and I will be going back to test out the brunch menu too!

Kevin Hart (@KevinHart4Real) & Friends @ Wembley SSE (Hartbeat Weekend) [Review]

I ventured down to Wembley’s SSE Arena on Sunday to watch the magnificent American comedian Kevin Hart who was joined by some of his friends for the Hartbeat Weekend.

Kevin-Harts-HartBeat-Weekend

Let me explain briefly who Kevin Hart is for some of you that don’t know. Well he is a pretty big deal especially in the States and is now here too as the SSE was packed to the brim with fans and celebrities. He is not only a successful comedian but an actor too, appearing in ‘Little Fockers’, ‘Soul Plane’, ‘Paper Soldiers’ and more.

Out of Philadelphia like some of his comedy inspirations such as Dave Chappelle and Eddie Murphy, Harts’ stand up comedy is really worth watching as he talks about his life experiences and insecurities making it relevant to the listener also.

Harts’ friends included Hackney bred Kojo who was the only Brit on the bill, but for me was the best as I think everyone in the crowd understood his dry humor and it was literally non-stop laughs throughout. Rodney Perry was my second favourite one as he also drew on life experiences in particular his age and family. Deon Cole also had quite a dry humor, entering the stage dressed sort of cow-boy looking with a list of things of jokes he had to complete, ticking them off as he went along. The headliner was Donnell Rawlings from New York who also had people in stitches and brought a different energy to Wembley.

All in all every act brought something different to their performance, and no one was similar to the other, making it an absolutely fantastic night of comedy to remember.

Youngs Teflon (@YoungsTeflon) Live At Barfly Camden [Review]

Youngs Teflon held his first headline show on Monday (September 1) at Barfly in Camden where he performed tracks from his recently released mixtape ‘The Renaissance’ with a live band. The Wrap Up’s Shireen Fenner headed down there to watch Tefs and all of his special guests for this live night featuring some of the best UK rap had to offer.

Teflon hit the stage accompanied by just Docta Cosmic on the decks, with his special guests joining him afterwards. Released in March, ‘The Renaissance’ went to No.1 in the iTunes hip-hop chart and No.22 in the overall national album charts, proving the strength of homegrown music in the UK.

Tefs performed the ‘My Pattern Intro’ from the mixtape and a track called ‘Never Failed School’ produced by Carns Hill which was a kind of middle finger to his school and teachers who thought he would fail; we discovered that ultimately he had done very well and received 2 A*’s for his English GCSEs. ‘Survivor’s Story’ and ‘Django’ got really good crowd reaction and it seemed everyone in the crowd were true supporters, knowing every lyric of every song. One thing was clear, Youngs Teflon was not disappointing any of his fans tonight.

One of the highlights for a lot of people was seeing Blade Brown and Corleone join Youngs Teflon for their collaborative track ‘Trap God’ which got everyone buzzing and Donae’o getting up on stage for their recent track ‘Oi Mate’ which set the internet alight – most people knew these two tracks word for word. Bonkaz, Stormzy and Swift also performed their cover of Krept & Konan’s ‘Don’t Waste My Time’ with the crowd getting more and more energetic with Stormzy also performing his HeavyTrackerz – produced song ‘Not That Deep’.

I loved how Docta Cosmic started mixing grime beats such as Rebound X’s ‘Rhythm N Gash’ into some of the tracks with Youngs Teflon and a lot of his guests, including Section Boyz on the stage in the middle of the show and them all spitting together, and then completely switching it over to grime. This was one of the most creative shows musically I’ve been to in a while and I hope to see more shows like this in the future.

MTV The Wrap Up: Global Gathering 2014 [Review]

Global Gathering returned to the pretty, historical town of Stratford-upon-Avon to bring us the best in electronic music in two days of partying. The festival has been going for 13 years now, and each year festival goers can listen to 12 hours per day of music, this is definitely for the hardcore ravers.

Main stage acts included the legendary Andy C who literally played tune after tune on his hour long set on the Saturday, keeping the drum & bass ravers exceptionally happy. Jaguar Skills brought his mixing skill to the table blending hip-hop, funk, dub, drum & bass and everything in between. Major Look warmed up the sitting down crowd nicely with his early 1pm set getting everyone up. Annie Mac also smashed the main set in pure dance style that only she can do. Netsky was a firm favourite of mine on the Friday and Chase & Status who headlined on Friday completely smashed it with their light effects and music.

Apart from the main stage the UKF tent, Hospitality and 1Xtra tent was where I spent most of my time. Wilkinson played to a rammed UKF tent with an exceptional set playing well-known tracks such as ‘Afterglow’ and ‘Too Close’. Friction also played a standout set as always but unfortunately no special guests were present. I also caught a bit of Matrix & Futurebound and Digital Soundboy’s Shy FX who played a pure class set of jungle and drum & bass.

Hospitality set up on the Saturday too and I ventured over various times to watch and listen to the sounds of High ContrastSigma and Camo & Krooked. Sigma played their single which has taken over the airways ‘Nobody To Love’ getting the crowd singing along to every word, and showcased some other great tunes. Welsh drum & bass producer and DJ High Contrast played a fantastic set to a highly lively and energetic crowd for an hour.

I also managed to catch a bit of Toddla T and Mungos Hifi over at Ram Jam. Overall the festival was one of my favourites of the year so far, full of energy and a great crowd, and managed to keep me up on my feet dancing for pretty much the whole time. See you there next year!

Lovebox Festival Saturday 2014 [Review]

Lovebox returned to Victoria Park in East London again this year over the Friday 18th and 19th July 2014. SBTV‘s Shireen headed down there on the Saturday, with the sun beating down on us despite the rainy forecast…

First up we caught some of Supa Dupa Fly action over at the Roller Boogie stage where they were banging out some old school hip hop beats courtesy of Emily Rawson, CJ Beatz and more, with a similar vibe to that of their nights held at the Jazz Café in Camden.

Heading straight over to the main stage, we caught the British soul & funk legends that are Soul II Soul , who many know for their smash Back To Life. Their music filtered through the crowd, with a nice mellow and relaxed vibe, perfect for the summer, Saturday, afternoon.

Maverick Sabre was next up on the main stage, leading on perfectly with his soulful, jazzy and reggae influences, he kept the crowds ambiance on the same level, lifting it slowly as his set moved on playing tracks from his album, Lonely Are The Brave. Similarly, I Needgot everyone in the crowd singing loudly – as did his latest single, Emotion.

Then, it was time for Nas, a crowd of people begun walking up, and what seemed like a reasonably spacious main stage was now packed. Joined by DJ Green Lantern, the Queensbridge legend took to the stage to perform tracks from his seminal debut, Illmatic, celebrating 20 years since the release. Tracks such as Got Yourself A Gungot everyone buzzing and raising their gun fingers.

Other tracks that seemed to please were One LoveIf I Ruled The World, N.Y State Of Mind and Made You Look. Nas had turned the energy levels to 100.  He proved why he is one of the best hip hop artists working the stage and fans with complete effortlessness.

Next up was MIA who blast onto the stage which was now filled with lights and around 20 dancers who threw glow sticks into the audiences to their delight. She started straight intoBucky Done Gun, but unfortunately this was the beginning of the audio issues as she asked for her Mic to be turned up.

Unfortunately the Mic cut out completely and her and her dancers walked off stage leaving MIA looking not very pleased. She came back on stage to the audience’s gladness, but the sound quality was still poor as she performed Paper Planes and Bad Girls leaving again because of the audio. It was a disappointment as we, along with I’m sure many others in attendance, were similarly looking forward to the performance.

Sam Smith: Live @ Somerset House For Topman Generation [Review]

Somerset House has an annual live music event, the Summer Series over 10 days with some of pop music’s favourite stars. This year saw Chvrches, Kelis and star of the moment Sam Smith, among others, take to the outdoor stage to perform to fans who were lucky enough to get tickets to the event and hear him perform a variety of tracks including ones from his album ‘The Lonely Hour’.

Grammy nominated MNEK warmed up doing a mash up of ‘Ready For Your Love’ and Duke Dumont ft A*M*’E’s ‘Need U 100%’ and new single ‘Wrote A Song About You’.

His charisma and charm seemed to enchant the audience as he spoke in between tracks explaining and sharing the secret that he wrote it because he’s never been in love before. He also explained that he used to work in St Pauls just up the road, explaining why performing here felt like home to him, and this certainly came across to all present as he comfortably performed several of his honest, intimate and heartfelt tracks to us.

Among these performances was a live band rendition of the well known hit ‘La La La’, which despite Naughty Boy’s absence, impressively showcased his vocals nonetheless, and the well known ‘Latch’ from an inspired synergy with the producer duo Disclosure. His voice was simply electric like the thunderstorm sky on the Friday night that he took the stage to, which started drizzling with rain just before he came out. This didn’t stop people from singing along and dancing and he joked with the audience telling them to put a middle finger up to the rain, also adding “who’s been moaning about the heat all day?”

‘Money On My Mind’ was a clear favourite with the audience as the more upbeat track got people moving and dancing around to the No.1 smash. Tracks such as ‘I’m Not The Only One’ was another favourite and everyone was singing to the soulful and emotive track. ‘Leave Your Lover’ which is another one of his more ‘slower’ tracks and on release got people thinking about the story line, left the crowd in awe. ‘I’m Not The Only One’ got Sam filled with emotion as he disclosed no other time had he heard the audience sing it back to him.

Of course we can’t forget the moment Sam’s band began to play my favourite track of his ‘Stay With Me’ which I had a feeling he was going to end on and the Queen of R&B Mary J. Blige made her entrance onto stage to perform with him. The crowd all screamed together as she entered and we stood in the rain together singing and watching in amazement as a legend and a maybe soon-to-be legend, sang beautifully together, taking everyone’s breath away.

Sam Smith truly was magical at Somerset House, more than any time that I’ve been fortunate enough to see him before.

Camden Crawl 2014 [Review]

SBTV‘s Shireen Fenner headed to this year’s Camden Crawl festival over the weekend to catch all of the action…

Camden Crawl took place last weekend Friday 20th and Saturday 21st June across many bars and venues. First up on Friday was rising R&B singer Raheem Bakare who played at the Monarch. He wowed the audience with his stunning vocals from his recent EP AWOL as well as covering Sam Smith’s Stay With Me. It wasn’t just me blown away by this future superstar, everyone was captivated as we also all sung along to Bob Marley with Raheem.

Ghetts was up next with his live band and he performed to the packed pub with such raw energy, it was hard to not enjoy his performance. filled with such vigor and freshness. He was joined by Rival, a highly rated MC who performed collaborative track Said To Me with Ghetts, also bursting with liveliness. Ghett’s performed tracks off his album such as Gas Mark 9 leaving us all on a high.

Next stop was Underworld to watch UK rap favourites Krept & Konan. It was disappointing not to see the venue full for them, as these two deserved, but they gave it their all performing their hit Don’t Waste My Time and other tracks off their recently released and critically acclaimed Young King mixtape. DJ Target took over on the decks now to play a mixture of tunes, and Manga joined him on hosting duties keeping the crowd lively.

Itch FM and Big Promo’s Thad Boogie put on a great stage at the Beatrice on the Saturday night. I arrived first to see the rapper everyone is talking about Little Simz. She just released her EP, E.D.G.E, which she showcased some tracks and showed newbies to Simz why she is next in line to blow. Her confidence along with her unique voice, skippy flow and bouncy energy got everyone listening.

Lady Lykez was up next on the same stage, and the North London had the most vivacity of the night. She was like a lioness on stage, encouraging the audience to bounce along with her and chant her lyrics back, she has fantastic stage presence performing tracks such as, I Love My Butt, which celebrates body image, Eurgh and Psycho her recent release which explores dynamics in relationships.

Emily Rawson and Big Ted were at their usual spot in Camden, the Jazz Café where they put on regular hip hop night ‘Supa Dupa Fly’. Here, we checked out Blizzard. With just himself and a keyboard (yes, he plays), along with his charm, he took to the stage performing his own tracks and getting the crowd to sing along to tracks such as Wilkinson’s Afterglow. Our favourite bit of his set was a rendition of Tracey Chapman’s Fast Car nameed Megabus, which was an extremely witty and funny track about the struggles of his journeys from Manchester to London.

Next up, Mumdance and Novelist took it up a notch as it got to that time of the night where we wanted to dance and that is just what we did. Performing at KOKO, Novelist really impressed us with his ability to control the audience and keep them entertained, as well as Mumdance’s too. They both held their own, with Mumdance displaying his unique, futuristic sounds.

Last but not least was Plastician, who had us raving our hearts out to his set. As a pioneer in the scene, we wouldn’t have expected any less than what he gave us switching up between dubstep and grime and a little of something inbetween.

All in all, it was a great weekend for fantastic music, as Ghett’s told us, ““Camden Crawl was one of my best gigs to date, really looking forward doing it again next year. It’s a great festival for introducing new talent into the London scene”. We couldn’t have put it better ourselves  (obviously not the performing part, but, hey, you never know!)

Nasir Mazhar x Skepta Collaboration Afterparty [Review]

I headed to the after party to celebrate Nasir Mazhar and Skepta‘s collaborative efforts at Metropolis Strip Club in East London, where models and grime artists awaited and guests such as A$AP Rocky were present…

They say music and fashion go hand in hand and this is the perfect example of that. Grime and fashion in this case, as Nasir Mazhar collaborated with Skepta on a jacket for his collection during London Collection: Mens. Their collaboration was not limited to fashion as they also worked together on the soundtrack, too.

The event was put on by Red Bull Studios, who are committed to bringing together fashion designers and up and coming musicians to create soundtracks for fashion week.

The male models from the show – as well as the dancers – were also wearing Nasir’s contemporary new designs, giving people who weren’t at the show the opportunity to check out the designs.

Nasir is one of the hottest young designers around at the moment, known for his edgy, fashion forward and contemporary streetwear. Skepta is one of grime’s brightest and most talked about artists, so the fusion of these two seems like a completely natural one.

Skepta brought in some other grime stars to perform on the night including Boy Better Know’s Jammer, Newham Generals’ D Double E and Footsie, newcomer and rising star Novelist and on the decks we saw Swindle and Preditah holding it down. These performances were the highlight of the night with everyone’s eyes locked on them.

All in all, it was a good night for the UK fashion and music scene, and was fantastic to see two great talents joining forces to create something tremendous.

Pusha T (@Pusha_T) (@Meridian_Dan) At Koko Camden [Review]

Pusha T was in London last night where he played at Koko in Camden to a sold out show, proving his status in the UK as one of raps current kings. The rapper who a lot of people know from Clipse, and where he will always be remembered, put on a an energetic and passionate performance last night showcasing his now King Push status as a solo artist…

Opening up for the Broxn born, Virginia based rapper was Bloodline’s Meridian Dan who has shot to fame recently when his track ‘German Whip’ blew up and he well deservingly signed with EGA and PMR. The North London rapper started his set with new track ‘I’m From A Place’, then leading into an unheard new track which could potentially be his next single ‘One, Two Drinks’. He then put his hit track ‘German Whip’ in the middle that really livened the crowd up ending on freestyle over S-X’s ‘Woo Riddim’. Great to Meridian Dan doing so well and opening up for someone like Push at Koko

King Push opened his set with a track off his 2013 album ‘My Name Is My Name’. It was only right that he started off with ‘King Push’, which was produced by his label boss over at GOOD Music Kanye West.

‘Millions’ a well-known track and collaboration with Rick Ross was of course added to the set list. Two Kanye West collaborative tracks that I heard last night was ‘Runaway’ and ‘New God Flow’ two tracks with a couple of years between them, bringing some older and newer material together.

The collaborative track ‘Mercy’ was performed and it was a bit of a shame not to have seen GOOD music artist Big Sean not come out as a surprise guest. He could have also been helped Push out when he did ‘I Don’t Like’ another big hit, it would have added something fresh.

He then went back to perform one of his newer tracks and a popular one again ‘Sweet Serenade’ featuring Chris Brown and produced by Swizz Beatz and Kanye West a thoughtful track looking at the rap game. He unofficially ended on another one off his debut album ‘Numbers On The Board’ with a percussion led bet co-produced again by Kanye. As King Push left the stage, the crowd demanded an encore and he delivered it to them coming back on stage to perform ’40 Acres’ ft. The Dream.

I give the show a 4.5 out of 5 for his energy and ability to keep the crowd happy and deliver his tracks like he has never performed them before with a new lease of life. You can see Pusha’s love for what he does on stage and he bounces around on the stage with such liveliness and this rubbed off on the crowd becoming infectious.

Pusha T is working on a new album  ‘King Push’ which will see production from Pharrell who along with Chad  (The Neptune’s) produced the first Clipse album ‘Lord Willin’ . Word is Timberland is also working on the album with him too. I look forward to that when it drops.
